Veteran film actor Srinath inaugurated the Shivamogga Dasara celebrations on Sunday, October 11, 2026, marking the commencement of the traditional festival in the city. The inauguration was accompanied by a vibrant procession of the Chamundeshwari idol, which began from the City Corporation premises and proceeded towards the Chandika Durga Parameshwari Temple on Kote Street.
Dasara Celebrations Begin with Procession and Cultural Performances
The commencement of the Shivamogga Dasara was marked by a colorful procession, with veteran actor Srinath participating and dancing to the beats of folk artists. Shivamogga MLA S.N. Channabasappa and other dignitaries joined in the festivities, underscoring the community’s enthusiasm for the annual celebration. The festival, organized under the leadership of the Shivamogga City Corporation, aims to be a grand affair, with hopes of rivaling the prominence of Dasara celebrations in Mysuru and Madikeri.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, the Shivamogga Dasara is an 11-day event. A significant highlight this year includes the Goddess Chamundeshwari adorning a specially crafted golden mask, a departure from the traditional silver idol placement. The deity has also been adorned with new gold-plated bangles, earrings, necklaces, and other sacred ornaments prepared by the City Corporation. Three elephants—Bahaddur, Somanna, and Sagar—from the Sakrebailu Elephant Camp have been deployed to lead the grand ceremonial procession.
Cultural Extravaganza and Community Engagement
The festival schedule encompasses a wide array of sub-events, including Women’s Dasara, Children’s Dasara, Cultural Dasara, Yuva Dasara, and Ranga Dasara, ensuring engagement across various segments of the community. Senior actress Padma Vasanthi is slated to attend the Cultural Dasara on October 18, while star actor V. Ravichandran will inaugurate Yuva Dasara on October 20. These cultural components are integral to the elaborate celebrations planned for the citizens.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that a total budget of Rs 2.1 crore has been allocated for the festivities. This includes Rs 50 lakh from the state government and Rs 1.6 crore from municipal funds. The district minister, Madhu Bangarappa, is reportedly making efforts to secure additional funds to alleviate any financial pressure on the municipality. Furthermore, dedicated teams of civic workers have been deployed across key event locations to ensure cleanliness and sanitation throughout the festival’s duration.
Veteran actor Srinath, the chief guest for the inauguration, expressed his delight at participating in the Shivamogga Dasara. He noted the traditional and devotional fervor of the celebrations, observing the smiles and happiness it brought to the faces of the residents. He mentioned his prior belief that Dasara was primarily celebrated in Mysuru, but acknowledged the grandeur of the Shivamogga celebration, attributing his invitation to the grace of Goddess Chamundeshwari. He also expressed his commitment to attend any future events in Uduthanahalli, where an Akkadevi statue is being installed.
The festival aims not only to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the region but also to foster a sense of community and shared joy among its residents. The extensive planning and budget allocation reflect the city’s commitment to making Shivamogga Dasara a significant and memorable event.
