BJP Women MPs to Meet President Murmu Over JNU Professor’s Sacking Amid Sexual Harassment Allegations

A delegation of women Members of Parliament from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is scheduled to meet President Droupadi Murmu to present their concerns regarding the recent dismissal of a Congress MP from his professorship at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) following sexual harassment charges.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the meeting with the President is intended to draw her attention to the sacking of Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, who is also the Member of Parliament from Inner Manipur, from his position as a professor at JNU. This action follows an inquiry that found him guilty of sexual harassment allegations.

The development comes a day after the BJP Mahila Morcha, the women’s wing of the BJP, organized protests outside the Congress headquarters in the national capital and in various locations across Himachal Pradesh. During these demonstrations, the party demanded the expulsion of Akoijam from the Congress party.

Union Minister for Women and Child Development, Annpurna Devi, participated in the protest held in Delhi on Monday, alongside several other women MPs and party workers. Sources indicated that the delegation plans to raise the issue with President Murmu and seek her intervention.

The Jawaharlal Nehru University had last week dismissed Professor Akoijam after an internal inquiry substantiated the sexual harassment allegations against him. He was associated with the Centre for the Study of Social Systems within JNU’s School of Social Sciences.

Reports suggest that at least eleven female students had lodged formal complaints of sexual harassment against the professor in May 2026. The complaints detailed alleged instances where Akoijam is said to have invited students to his campus residence under the guise of meetings or gatherings, purportedly with the intent of sexual exploitation. Some of the complainants also alleged that he made obscene and inappropriate remarks during class sessions.
