Himachal Pradesh: Shimla Police Dismantle 61 Drug Networks This Year, Intensify Crackdown

SHIMLA: The Shimla district police have successfully dismantled 61 drug trafficking networks in the current year, marking a significant increase in operations compared to previous years. This intensified crackdown reflects a revised strategy by the police department focused on targeting key suppliers and dismantling entire smuggling chains.

Police Shift Focus to Quality Seizures and Key Arrests

Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating a substantial rise in law enforcement’s success against drug networks in Shimla district. The district police reported dismantling three drug networks in 2025 and four in 2024, contrasting sharply with the 61 networks dismantled this year. Additional Superintendent of Police (City) Mehar Panwar elaborated on the strategic shift, stating that the police have altered their approach to drug trafficking, yielding positive outcomes. Previously, the primary objective was to register the maximum number of cases. However, the current emphasis is on achieving larger and higher-quality seizures, apprehending pivotal figures in the supply chain, tracing backward linkages, conducting thorough technical and financial investigations, and dismantling entire interstate smuggling operations. The authorities are also utilizing the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act to detain habitual drug smugglers.

The strategy’s scope extends beyond mere seizures and arrests, aiming to identify and apprehend all individuals involved in the drug supply chain. By meticulously analysing clues, digital evidence, mobile data, Call Detail Records (CDRs), Internet Protocol Detail Records (IPDRs), and other technical information gathered from ongoing cases, the police are actively establishing backward linkages. This methodical approach allows investigators to trace the origins and distribution channels of illicit substances.

High-Profile Arrests and Interstate Network Busted

In a recent operation on August 3, acting on a credible tip-off, the police’s Special Cell apprehended Vijay Kumar, a resident of Haryana. Kumar was intercepted near Shoghi with a substantial quantity of 1.12 kilograms of heroin, commonly referred to as ‘chitta’. This arrest is indicative of the police’s success in intercepting large drug consignments and apprehending individuals involved in cross-state trafficking.

Earlier in March, the Shimla police achieved a significant breakthrough by busting an interstate drug network. During this operation, 562 Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) stamps were seized. The subsequent investigation, based on the established backward linkages, led to the arrest of the main supplier based in Kerala. Further technical and digital investigations in this case uncovered the involvement of four police officers. These officers were subsequently arrested and dismissed from service, highlighting the pervasive nature of drug infiltration and the police department’s commitment to internal accountability.

The sustained efforts by the Shimla district police underscore a proactive stance against drug trafficking. The department’s revised operational strategy, focusing on intelligence-led operations, meticulous investigation, and targeting the higher echelons of drug syndicates, appears to be yielding tangible results. The dismantling of numerous drug networks and the arrest of key suppliers are crucial steps in disrupting the flow of narcotics into the region and safeguarding the community from the detrimental effects of drug abuse.
