Himachal Pradesh: Lahaul Seeks Spiritual Hub Status for Chandrabhaga River Confluence

Residents of the Lahaul valley in Himachal Pradesh’s Lahaul-Spiti district have petitioned the Union government to elevate the confluence of the Chandra and Bhaga rivers, known as Chandrabhaga Sangam, into a significant spiritual and religious tourism destination.

Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the appeal was formally presented through a memorandum submitted to Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda by Ramesh Chand Solmi, the pradhan of Gaushal gram panchayat, along with other local inhabitants. The memorandum specifically calls for the development of a grand ghat, a stupa, and essential infrastructure to support religious tourism at the sacred meeting point of the two rivers.

The Chandrabhaga Sangam holds deep historical, mythological, and spiritual significance, revered as a holy site since the Vedic period. In ancient texts, the river was known as Asikni in the Rigveda and later evolved to be identified as the Chenab. It plays a pivotal role in the region’s religious and cultural fabric.

Local traditions and beliefs imbue the confluence with profound spiritual importance. It is widely held that the final rites for Draupadi, a central figure in the epic Mahabharata, were performed at this Sangam, and her ashes were immersed here. This belief has significantly enhanced the site’s spiritual standing among devotees and the valley’s residents.

The Chandrabhaga Sangam has also become a symbol representing the harmonious coexistence of Hindu and Buddhist traditions. A notable event reinforcing this identity occurred in 2016 when the ashes of Ashok Singhal were immersed at the site. This led to the establishment of an annual festival that celebrates the convergence of these two major religious traditions, gradually solidifying the site’s religious appeal and its potential to attract a diverse range of pilgrims and spiritual travellers.

Ramesh Chand Solmi highlighted the impact of improved connectivity on the valley, particularly following the construction of the Atal Tunnel in Rohtang. This enhanced accessibility has led to a substantial increase in tourist footfall, opening new avenues for promoting Lahaul’s rich religious heritage alongside its breathtaking natural landscapes. According to data cited in the memorandum, approximately 16 lakh vehicles transited through the region in the past year, underscoring the burgeoning popularity of Lahaul-Spiti as a favored tourist destination.

The gram pradhan emphasized that the proposed development of the Chandrabhaga Sangam would not only serve to preserve the area’s distinct cultural and spiritual heritage but also foster new economic opportunities for the local communities. The envisioned facilities encompass the creation of a grand bathing ghat, a Buddhist stupa, and essential amenities tailored for the comfort of pilgrims and tourists alike.

Local residents express a strong conviction that the planned infrastructure development has the potential to establish the Chandrabhaga Sangam as a preeminent spiritual tourism hub within the broader Himalayan region. They have urged the central government to give serious consideration to their proposal and to extend the necessary support to transform this historic river confluence into a well-equipped and accessible religious destination.
