A senior constable lost his life in Punjab’s Muktsar district after being struck by a speeding vehicle at a police checkpoint. The incident occurred late last night at the Pakki Tibbi checkpoint in Malout tehsil, where the officer was on duty.
The Chenab Times has learned that the deceased, identified as Chandan Pandey, approximately 37 years old, was performing his duties when a vehicle laden with potatoes collided with him. Despite being rushed to Bathinda for medical treatment, he succumbed to his injuries.
Inspector Varun Yadav, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Kabarwala police station, confirmed the details of the tragic incident. He stated that the constable was a resident of Malout and is survived by his two sons. The police have taken two individuals into custody in connection with the incident, and investigations are underway.
The Pakki Tibbi checkpoint is a known route for transporting agricultural produce, and vehicles often move through it, especially during the night. Officials stated that the incident highlights the inherent risks faced by law enforcement personnel performing their duties on the road, particularly in areas with significant traffic flow. The local police administration has initiated a probe to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the accident.
Sources indicate that the vehicle involved was a truck or tempo, typically used for transporting goods. The constable was reportedly positioned to flag down or check vehicles as part of routine security and traffic enforcement measures. The suddenness of the impact and the nature of the vehicle are believed to have contributed to the severity of the injuries sustained by the officer.
Following the incident, the police swiftly cordoned off the area and launched an immediate search for the vehicle and its occupants. The apprehension of two individuals suggests that the vehicle and its driver were identified shortly after the collision. Further details regarding the motive or negligence, if any, behind the incident are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
The death of Constable Chandan Pandey has sent shockwaves through the police fraternity in the region. Colleagues and superiors have expressed deep sorrow and extended their condolences to his family. The SHO emphasised the dedication of the late constable and his commitment to public service, noting his service at the Kabarwala police station.
The incident also brings to the forefront the persistent challenges faced by police personnel working in traffic management and law enforcement. Checkpoints are crucial for maintaining order and preventing illegal activities, but they can also expose officers to dangers from negligent or intentional actions by motorists. The authorities are reportedly reviewing safety protocols for personnel deployed at such points.
Legal proceedings are expected to commence against the individuals apprehended, with charges likely to include causing death by negligence or other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, depending on the findings of the investigation. The police are gathering evidence, including witness statements and forensic reports, to build a strong case. The district administration has also been informed, and support for the bereaved family is being coordinated.
The area of Malout in Muktsar district is primarily agricultural, with significant movement of produce to markets. Checkpoints are often established to regulate the transport of goods, check for compliance with agricultural laws, and ensure overall security. The specific nature of the cargo, potatoes, suggests the vehicle was likely involved in agricultural trade.
The SHO added that the police are committed to ensuring that justice is served in this case and that all necessary measures are taken to prevent such incidents in the future. The investigation is being treated with utmost seriousness, and a thorough inquiry is being conducted by the district police department.
