Approximately 15,000 individuals from Himachal Pradesh are scheduled to participate in a rally organised by the INDIA bloc at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on November 1. The protest aims to voice opposition against alleged electoral malpractice, including claims of vote manipulation and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the announcement was made by Rajani Patil, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge for party affairs in Himachal Pradesh, during a joint press conference held by INDIA bloc leaders in Shimla. The opposition parties anticipate a turnout of around 10 lakh people at the rally. Leaders from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Communist Party of India were also present, underscoring a unified stance on the electoral issues.
During the press conference, the leaders articulated concerns that voting rights and the integrity of free and fair elections are currently under threat. They called for increased unity among opposition parties to intensify their protest against the Central Government and the Election Commission of India.
Rajani Patil stated, “All Opposition parties are united on the issue of vote theft and will fight collectively to protect democratic rights.” She further alleged a collusion between the Bharatiya Janata Party and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Patil added that the Congress party intends to contest this issue decisively and will initiate a month-long campaign in Himachal Pradesh titled ‘Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao’.
Rakesh Singha, a senior leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and a former MLA, remarked that the erosion of free and fair electoral processes constitutes an affront to the Constitution. He urged all secular forces to unite in safeguarding voting rights and democratic institutions. Singha elaborated, “Free and fair elections are the foundation of our democracy. If they are under assault, there will be no democracy left. We all have to come together on one platform, just as people united to drive the British out of the country many decades ago.”
The INDIA bloc has been increasingly vocal about its apprehensions regarding the electoral process. Following the recent Lok Sabha elections, several opposition parties have raised concerns about the functioning of the Election Commission and the integrity of the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which aims to update voter lists, has also become a point of contention, with allegations that it could be used to disenfranchise voters.
The planned rally in Delhi is seen as a significant effort by the opposition alliance to consolidate its support base and present a united front on issues critical to democratic governance. The participation of a substantial number of people from Himachal Pradesh signifies the regional engagement and commitment to the bloc’s national agenda.
The parties involved have indicated that further agitations and awareness campaigns are being planned across the country to highlight their concerns about electoral reforms and the protection of democratic principles. The November 1 rally is expected to set the tone for subsequent actions by the INDIA bloc.
