Udhampur Bus Accident Claims 15 Lives; President Murmu Expresses Condolences

At least fifteen people lost their lives and sixteen others sustained injuries in a tragic bus accident that occurred in the Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday. The passenger bus was en route when it met with the accident near the Jalo area, along the Ramnagar–Udhampur route.

The Chenab Times has learned that the incident took place around 10 a.m. when the bus was navigating a blind curve near Kagort village in the Ramnagar area. Emergency services and local authorities were immediately dispatched to the site to conduct rescue operations and transport the injured to nearby medical facilities.

President Droupadi Murmu took to the social media platform X to express her deep sorrow over the loss of life in the Udhampur road mishap. “Deeply saddened by the tragic accident in Udhampur district, Jammu and Kashmir, which has claimed several lives,” the President posted. She extended her heartfelt sympathies to the families of the deceased and wished for the swift recovery of those who were injured in the unfortunate incident.

Officials are currently investigating the cause of the accident. Preliminary reports suggest that the driver might have lost control of the vehicle while negotiating the treacherous curve. The steep terrain and the nature of the road are considered contributing factors to accidents in the region, particularly for heavy vehicles. Local residents and first responders played a crucial role in the immediate aftermath, assisting in the rescue and evacuation efforts.

The administration has announced ex-gratia relief for the families of those who died in the accident and has pledged to cover the medical expenses of the injured. Investigations are underway to determine the precise sequence of events leading to the crash. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges related to road safety in hilly and remote areas, prompting authorities to review safety protocols and infrastructure along such routes. Traffic analysis and road condition assessments are expected to be part of the ongoing inquiry.

The Ramnagar–Udhampur route is known for its winding paths and occasional blind spots, requiring drivers to exercise extreme caution. The bus, reportedly a passenger service, was carrying locals at the time of the incident. The injured have been admitted to district hospitals and are receiving medical attention. The number of fatalities and injuries could potentially be updated as the situation develops and medical assessments are completed.

Condolences have poured in from various political leaders and civil society groups, who have expressed shock and grief over the tragedy. The focus remains on providing support to the affected families and ensuring that such incidents are prevented in the future through enhanced road safety measures and public awareness campaigns. The investigation aims to identify any potential negligence or mechanical failure that might have contributed to the accident.
