West Bengal Elections: PM Modi Claims ‘Wave of Change’, Predicts BJP Victory After Phase 1 Polling

Prime Minister Narendra Modi claimed on Friday that the initial phase of polling in West Bengal has signaled a significant “wave of change” and asserted that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would emerge victorious in the ongoing assembly elections. Addressing a public rally in Panihati, located under the Dum Dum Lok Sabha constituency in North 24 Parganas district, Modi alleged that the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) had undermined the state’s democratic institutions through a “dictatorial” approach.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that nearly 92 per cent of the 3.60 crore eligible voters participated in the first phase of the West Bengal assembly polls held on Thursday. “The wave of change that has been visible in Bengal for a long time — yesterday’s first phase of voting has put its seal on it. The support shown yesterday in favour of the BJP has sounded the conch shell of its victory,” the Prime Minister stated.

Modi further alleged that the TMC, which he characterized as having “crushed the temple of democracy with its dictatorship,” was now being challenged by the people of Bengal who were beginning to “reconstruct” democracy through their electoral mandate. He urged voters to “unfurl the victory flag over this temple” in the subsequent phases of polling.

The Prime Minister contended that the TMC appeared “extremely rattled” following the first phase of voting. He accused the ruling party of mobilizing its supporters, whom he referred to as “goons,” throughout the preceding night. Modi also warned that after the election results are declared on May 4, “TMC’s goons” would find themselves with no safe haven.

Characterizing the first phase of polling as the end of the TMC’s “maha jungle raj,” Prime Minister Modi intensified his criticism of the ruling party. He specifically targeted the TMC over issues of women’s safety, describing the party as “anti-women” and contrasting it with the BJP’s commitment to a “women-led development model.”

Referencing the BJP’s selection of women candidates, Modi highlighted that the party had nominated individuals who had allegedly experienced injustice. He cited the example of a candidate in Panihati, who is the mother of a victim in a prominent rape-murder case, stating that while her daughter was allegedly taken away from her by the TMC, the BJP had provided her with an opportunity to contest elections. The Prime Minister also mentioned the Sandeshkhali incident, alleging that the TMC had prevented victims from seeking justice and had instructed women not to leave their homes.
