A book release event at Delhi University was briefly disrupted on Thursday when members of the National Students Union of India (NSUI) staged a protest, raising slogans against a DD News anchor.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the demonstration occurred during the launch of the book ‘Decolonising the Indian Minds: From Colonial Roots to Cultural Marxism’, written by Prashant Barthwal. The protest was led by Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) Vice President Rahul Jhansla Yadav and other NSUI office bearers and students.
The NSUI members alleged that the DD News anchor had made objectionable remarks against Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. The student organization stated that disrespectful comments directed at democratic leaders and institutions would not be tolerated.
The event, held at the Sir Shankar Lal Hall in Delhi University, was presided over by Delhi University Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh. The keynote speaker at the book launch was Ramlal, the All-India Contact Head of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
During the programme, Delhi University Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh addressed the attendees, emphasizing that true decolonization involves more than just renaming roads and buildings. He asserted that the most crucial task is to change the mindset of Indians, stating that universities have a responsibility to work on students’ intellect, fostering minds that will propel the country forward. He added that 75 years after independence, discussions on decolonization remain pertinent.
Keynote speaker Ramlal highlighted the importance of documenting ideas through publications, noting the contemporary relevance of the subject of decolonization.
Journalist Ashok Srivastava, who was present as the chief guest, also spoke at the event. He discussed the lingering impact of colonial influences on Indian society and underscored the necessity of re-establishing connections with indigenous Indian knowledge traditions.
