SRINAGAR: Political leaders in Jammu and Kashmir have voiced their perspectives on the United States’ travel advisory for the region, with prominent figures urging for its review and others emphasizing India’s sovereignty in resolving local issues. The discussions emerged during the recent visit of US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, to Jammu and Kashmir.
Mufti Calls for Advisory Withdrawal Amid Economic Concerns
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti has directly appealed to US Ambassador Sergio Gor to reconsider and withdraw the highest-level travel advisory against visiting Jammu and Kashmir. Information was available with The Chenab Times that Mufti stated on social media platform X that the advisory significantly impacts the region’s tourism-dependent economy, describing it as a “wall between Kashmir and the world.” She emphasized that lifting the advisory would convey a strong message of confidence, encourage international tourists to return, and provide crucial relief to families reliant on the tourism sector for their livelihoods.
Abdullah Signals Potential Review, Stresses India’s Role
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, following his meeting with Ambassador Gor, indicated that the United States might reassess its travel advisory for the Valley. According to details received by The Chenab Times, Abdullah noted that the security situation in the Union Territory has seen significant improvement. However, he made it clear that while he would discuss the prevailing situation in Jammu and Kashmir with the US envoy, the resolution of the region’s internal issues remains the prerogative of the Government of India and not Washington. He described the meeting as productive, focusing on bilateral engagement with a specific emphasis on Jammu and Kashmir, and expressed optimism for increased engagement between the US and the region in the future. He added that discussions would continue with both Washington and the Government of India in New Delhi.
US Ambassador’s Visit and Diplomatic Discourse
Ambassador Gor’s visit to Jammu and Kashmir, his first since assuming office, included meetings with both Chief Minister Abdullah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. During his interactions, Gor described Jammu and Kashmir as an “important part of India” and hinted that the US travel advisory could be downgraded, acknowledging the improved security landscape. The US State Department currently categorizes Jammu and Kashmir under a Level 4: “Do Not Travel” advisory, citing terrorism and civil unrest as primary concerns, though exceptions are made for visits to eastern Ladakh and Leh.
The US advisory has been a long-standing concern for the tourism industry in Kashmir. Stakeholders have repeatedly called for its review, asserting that the Valley is safe and peaceful for visitors. The statements from both Mufti and Abdullah reflect the ongoing diplomatic discourse surrounding the region and its implications for both its economy and international perception.
