NEW DELHI, May 16: Activists of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) on Saturday protested in the national capital against the alleged irregularities and question paper leak in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET)-Undergraduate examination, demanding the resignation of the Union Education Minister.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that protesters, carrying posters, banners, and party flags, marched from Teen Murti Circle towards the Union Education Minister’s residence. They were intercepted by police personnel before reaching their intended destination, leading to the detention of several individuals, including IYC President Uday Bhanu Chib.
The NEET-UG examination, conducted on May 3, has been marred by allegations of irregularities, prompting the Union Ministry of Education to announce a re-test for affected candidates on June 21. The IYC, in its demonstration, asserted that the education system has “collapsed” under the current Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance government.
Protesters highlighted that in the past 12 years, approximately 89 examination papers have allegedly been leaked, with the NEET examination itself reportedly facing leak allegations on four separate occasions. This pattern, they argued, casts serious doubt on the integrity and fairness of the national examination system.
The Youth Congress voiced concerns that the prevailing system favors the affluent, suggesting that children from wealthy families will disproportionately secure seats and employment opportunities. Conversely, they contended, students from less privileged backgrounds will face significant disadvantages, exacerbating socio-economic disparities.
The protest underscores a growing public demand for accountability and reforms in the examination process, particularly for competitive entrance tests that significantly impact the academic and career trajectories of millions of Indian students annually. The detentions and the ongoing investigations into the NEET-UG exam irregularities are expected to intensify scrutiny on the examination conducting bodies and the Ministry of Education.
