Residents of Karkroo Mohalla in Nambla, Uri, located in the Baramulla district of north Kashmir, have voiced serious concerns regarding the quality of their drinking water. Allegations of dead rats being discovered within a water storage tank and the associated supply pipelines have led to widespread apprehension among the approximately 25 to 30 households dependent on the supply.
Information was available with The Chenab Times detailing the incident that has prompted residents to question the hygiene and safety standards of the water being provided to their locality. They are urgently appealing to the relevant authorities to implement immediate measures to guarantee that the water is safe for consumption and to prevent any potential health risks.
The discovery has led to calls for more stringent and regular inspections, as well as thorough cleaning of water storage tanks and supply pipelines. Residents emphasized the necessity of implementing preventive actions to avoid the recurrence of such incidents, which compromise public health.
In response to the complaints, the Assistant Executive Engineer of PHE Uri acknowledged the situation. The engineer stated that the affected water tank has already undergone cleaning procedures and that the water supply to the Karkroo Mohalla is expected to be restored within the hour.
Despite the assurance of immediate restoration, local community members have urged the Public Health Engineering department to ensure comprehensive sanitation of the entire water supply network. They have also called for periodic checks and maintenance protocols to be established, underscoring the importance of safeguarding the health and well-being of the residents in the long term.
The incident highlights ongoing challenges in maintaining adequate infrastructure and hygiene standards for water supply in some rural and remote areas.
