Mumbai, India – In the bustling heart of Dhobi Talao, an area known more for its everyday commerce, stands Tahir Arms and Ammunition, a shop that has been a silent witness to nearly nine decades of the city’s evolving history. Established in 1935 by Tahir Bandukwala, this establishment is one of Mumbai’s last remaining old-world gun shops, offering a unique window into a bygone era when firearm ownership was markedly different.
A Legacy Spanning Generations
The journey of Tahir Arms and Ammunition began in the pre-Independence era, with its founder, Tahir Bandukwala, initially catering to the needs of royal families and aristocrats who often purchased firearms in bulk for their private security details. Originally located on Abdul Rehman Street, the business was a collective endeavor, once jointly owned by eight brothers of Tahir Bandukwala. Over the decades, as Mumbai transformed into the metropolis it is today, the business also underwent significant changes. The shop is now managed by Hakim Hatim Bandukwala and Suhail Hatim Bandukwala, brothers who have been at the helm of the business since 1975, continuing the legacy established by their forefathers.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that highlights the profound shift in the nature of firearm sales and their usage. Today, Tahir Arms and Ammunition operates under strict regulations, exclusively selling guns suitable for sport shooting and only to individuals possessing valid licenses. This stands in stark contrast to its early days, when firearms were acquired for a broader range of purposes, including private security and ceremonial displays.
The Evolving Landscape of Sport Shooting
Hakim Bandukwala, one of the current proprietors, shared insights into the changing dynamics of shooting as a hobby. He noted that recreational shooting, once a more accessible pastime, has become increasingly niche due to its cost, the patience it requires, and the diminishing availability of open spaces. The environmental impact and the need for conservation have also contributed to numerous restrictions surrounding the sport. The expense of ammunition, with each bullet being a single-use item, further adds to the financial commitment required.
The decline in open spaces and the heightened awareness of wildlife conservation have collectively made sport shooting a more specialized activity, primarily confined to dedicated shooting clubs. This evolution in the sport has directly impacted businesses like Tahir Arms and Ammunition, requiring them to adapt to a more regulated and selective market. While the business has changed, the shop’s continued presence in Dhobi Talao is a testament to its enduring legacy and its ability to navigate the changing socio-economic and legal landscapes.
The shop, nestled within the lanes of Dhobi Talao, a vibrant commercial district, remains a quiet repository of history. Its existence serves as a reminder of a different era in Mumbai’s past, where establishments like Tahir Arms and Ammunition played a distinct role in the city’s social fabric. The brothers Hakim and Suhail Bandukwala continue to serve their clientele, upholding the reputation for quality and trust that the business has cultivated since its inception in 1935.
