Uttar Pradesh authorities have initiated a stringent security clampdown across the state in anticipation of the Bakrid festival, also known as Eid-ul-Adha. The administration has implemented extensive measures, including flag marches, foot patrols, and enhanced surveillance, particularly in districts identified as sensitive. These efforts are aimed at ensuring peace, communal harmony, and the smooth conduct of the festival.
Heightened Security Across Sensitive Districts
In preparation for Bakrid, numerous districts within Uttar Pradesh are under heightened security. This includes areas such as Sambhal, Meerut, Saharanpur, Rampur, Moradabad, Aligarh, Bareilly, Bahraich, Varanasi, and Ayodhya. The deployment of forces includes the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) and the Rapid Action Force (RAF), complemented by widespread CCTV surveillance. Senior officials have been actively reviewing security arrangements and issuing directives to police personnel to maintain order. The Saharanpur police have stated their commitment to continuous patrolling, vigilant monitoring, and necessary security arrangements to ensure the festival proceeds peacefully. They have also urged the public to avoid rumors and report any suspicious activity promptly.
Meerut police conducted foot patrols in key locations, markets, and important roads to foster peace and a harmonious environment. Similarly, the Rampur District Magistrate led a flag march through the city’s main roads and crowded areas. In Saharanpur, flag marches were organized in various areas, including Chilkana, with officials engaging with local dignitaries and the public to emphasize the importance of maintaining brotherhood and law and order during the festival.
Guidelines and Restrictions for Bakrid
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has issued strict directives to ensure compliance with law and order measures ahead of Bakrid. A key instruction is the prohibition of animal sacrifice at public places, with sacrifices permitted only at pre-designated locations. The sacrifice of prohibited animals is strictly banned, and authorities have been directed to take action against illegal slaughterhouses. The Chief Minister also emphasized that public roads should not be blocked for offering prayers (namaz), which must be conducted at traditional and designated sites. New traditions during the festival are to be discouraged. Furthermore, officials are tasked with ensuring proper waste disposal following sacrifices and enforcing a ban on the open sale of meat.
In Lucknow, a dispute over a prayer site in the Kasmandi area led to authorities barring Eid Al-Adha prayers at the location to prevent potential communal tension between Muslim residents and members of the Pasi community. Security has been significantly increased in the area, with barricades, drone surveillance, and CCTV monitoring in place. Officials have engaged in multiple meetings with representatives from both communities to de-escalate the situation.
Broader Security and Social Media Monitoring
Authorities are intensifying surveillance, utilizing drone monitoring and extensive foot patrols in communally sensitive areas to ensure peaceful celebrations. In Agra, a multi-layered security arrangement has been put in place, with the city divided into zones and sectors, and additional police and paramilitary forces deployed at strategic points. Peace committee meetings are being organized across police stations to facilitate dialogue and address concerns. The police are closely monitoring social media platforms to prevent the spread of misinformation, rumors, or inflammatory content, warning of strict action against offenders. The focus is on maintaining communal harmony and ensuring that the festival is observed peacefully across the state.
