Poultry farmers in Namakkal, a major egg production hub in Tamil Nadu, have refuted claims circulating on social media suggesting that contractors procured and stored a substantial quantity of eggs for extended periods to supply to schools under the noon meal scheme.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the allegations surfaced following a social media post by a former State president of the BJP, K. Annamalai. The post alleged that contractors had acquired nearly 20 crore eggs when prices reportedly dropped to ₹3.70 per egg in March. These eggs, according to the allegation, were then intended for long-term storage and subsequent supply to educational institutions participating in the state-run noon meal program.
The purported hoarding and storage of eggs have raised concerns about potential artificial price manipulation and the quality of food supplied to students. The noon meal scheme, a critical initiative in Tamil Nadu, aims to provide nutritious meals to school children, and eggs are a regular component of this diet, contributing essential proteins and nutrients.
However, representatives from the poultry farming community in Namakkal have strongly denied the veracity of these claims. They have stated that such large-scale, long-term storage of eggs is not a common practice within the industry due to the perishable nature of the product. Eggs require specific storage conditions to maintain freshness and nutritional value, and storing them for extended periods without proper infrastructure and regulatory oversight would be both economically unviable and logistically challenging.
The farmers have emphasized that their primary focus is on ensuring a consistent and timely supply of fresh eggs to meet market demand, including that of government schemes. They indicated that fluctuations in egg prices are often driven by seasonal demand, feed costs, and production cycles, rather than deliberate market manipulation by contractors for schemes like the noon meal program.
The denial by the poultry farmers suggests a potential discrepancy between the allegations made and the operational realities of the egg supply chain in the region. Namakkal district is renowned for its poultry industry, contributing significantly to the state’s egg production and economy. The farming community here is sensitive to issues that could impact their livelihood and the reputation of their industry.
Further investigation into the supply chain mechanisms and pricing structures of eggs for government schemes may be warranted to ascertain the facts. The noon meal scheme is a vital social welfare program, and ensuring its integrity and the quality of food provided to children is paramount.
