Uttar Pradesh cadre Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Divya Mittal has voluntarily resigned from her position, bringing an end to her 13-year career in public service. Mittal, a 2013-batch officer, announced her decision via a post on the social media platform X.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that in her post, Mittal stated, “Today, I have voluntarily resigned from the IAS, bringing to an end an unforgettable journey of 13 years.” She did not, however, provide any specific reasons for her departure from the civil services.
A Journey Marked by Ambition and Reflection
Mittal, who grew up in a modest background, shared that she harboured aspirations for a fulfilling and successful life. Her educational pursuits led her to prestigious institutions, including the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Delhi and the Indian Institute of Management (IIM)-Bangalore. Following her academic career, she initially took up employment in London before deciding to return to India.
Reflecting on her career choices, Mittal wrote that despite achieving professional success, a sense of incompleteness lingered. She expressed that her absence from her home country was a persistent concern. She articulated that her education, self-assurance, and the ability to navigate any situation with confidence were contributions she felt indebted to repay to her nation. Her subsequent successful attempt at the UPSC examination and her induction into the IAS were, in her view, fortunate outcomes.
Looking back at her various postings, Mittal highlighted the lessons learned from her assignments. Her tenure as District Magistrate in Deoria instilled in her the belief that “standing with what is right is not an option but a duty.” Similarly, her experience in Mirzapur taught her that “the impossible is not a fact, but merely an opinion.” During her service, while working with families in need, individuals with disabilities, and farmers, she observed that behind every bureaucratic file lay a human story and an individual’s needs.
Professional Background and Notable Tenures
Originally hailing from Rewari in Haryana, Divya Mittal holds a Bachelor of Technology degree from IIT-Delhi and an MBA from IIM-Bangalore. After her stint in London post-MBA, she prepared for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination. She successfully cleared the civil services examination on her second attempt in 2013, securing the 68th rank, which led to her induction into the IAS. In her first attempt in 2012, she had qualified for the Indian Police Service (IPS).
Prior to her resignation, Mittal served in various administrative capacities across Uttar Pradesh. Her postings included serving as the District Magistrate of Sant Kabir Nagar, Mirzapur, and Deoria. Subsequently, she was appointed as the Special Secretary in the Revenue Department of the Uttar Pradesh government.
During her tenure as the District Magistrate of Mirzapur, Mittal received considerable attention for her initiative to bring tap water to Lahuriadah, a remote village in the Halia block. This development was significant as it marked the first time running water reached the village, 75 years after India’s independence. Her administrative actions in Deoria were also noted by locals for her commitment to implementing government schemes effectively at the grassroots level and for her decisive leadership.
A senior official, speaking to PTI, indicated that the resignation had not yet been formally received. The official added that appropriate procedural steps would be undertaken once the resignation letter is officially processed.
