A 26-year-old model from Delhi has died after drowning in an abandoned stone quarry in Kerala’s Ernakulam district. The incident occurred on May 28 while the model was reportedly scouting for a commercial shoot location.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, the deceased, identified as Divyanshu Joshi, had travelled to Kochi as part of a clothing brand campaign. He was at an abandoned quarry in Pettamala with a friend to assess its suitability for a shoot when the tragedy unfolded.
Police investigations indicate that Joshi entered the water at the quarry and is believed to have lost his footing, subsequently disappearing beneath the surface. His companion immediately alerted local residents, who in turn contacted emergency services.
Rescue teams were dispatched to the scene and managed to retrieve Joshi from the deep water. He was promptly transported to a government hospital in Perumbavoor, where medical professionals declared him deceased.
Authorities have stated that the quarry had been disused for over two decades and is considered a hazardous site due to its significant depth and a history of previous drowning incidents. Warning signs were reportedly in place around the area, and local officials confirmed that no permissions had been granted for any kind of filming or shoot at the location.
Preliminary inquiries suggest that the quarry might have been chosen as a potential filming spot after videos showcasing its scenic, albeit dangerous, features gained traction on social media platforms.
In the days following the incident, the clothing brand for which Joshi was working issued a tribute to him, remembering him as a dedicated and valued member of their team. The company further clarified that his presence in Kerala was for a seasonal photo shoot and explicitly stated that swimming was not part of the production activities.
The police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the drowning incident.
