SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board Chairperson, Darakhshan Andrabi, has emphasized that Sufism represents the spiritual essence of Kashmir, advocating for its teachings to foster inclusivity, compassion, and peace. Speaking at various inter-faith gatherings and religious events, Andrabi has consistently highlighted the historical significance of Sufi traditions in bridging divides and promoting harmony within the region.
Sufism as the Heartbeat of Kashmir
In recent addresses, Dr. Andrabi has underscored Sufism’s role as a beacon of light, reflecting a rich spiritual heritage. She noted that this tradition is inherently one of inclusiveness, compassion, and peace, stressing the collective responsibility to revive and uphold these positive traditions in the current era of hard-earned peace. Her remarks often come during her visits to Sufi shrines, where she not only pays her respects but also reviews development projects aimed at preserving these spiritual sites.
Promoting Inclusivity and Peace
Dr. Andrabi has actively engaged with religious leaders and the youth, urging them to disseminate Sufi ideology. She believes that the spirit of inclusivity and spirituality, inherent in Sufism, is a significant strength that needs to be propagated among the younger generation. These teachings, she argues, are vital for creating a crime-free and humanitarian society where peace and prosperity can flourish. By reconnecting with the teachings of Sufis and Rishis, she stated, the region can be protected from divisive forces and foster a fearless, progressive society.
Revival of Spiritual Traditions
Andrabi has also pointed to the improved law and order situation in Kashmir since 2019 as conducive to the revival of Sufism. She noted that for decades, annual Urs celebrations at Sufi shrines were suppressed by separatists and their allies, depriving the region of its spiritual traditions. The current atmosphere, she remarked, allows for the free celebration of these spiritual practices and the revitalization of Sufi thought in Jammu and Kashmir.
Development of Shrines and Community Engagement
As Chairperson of the J&K Waqf Board, Dr. Andrabi has been instrumental in initiating development programs at major shrines, undertaking renovation and construction works despite resource limitations. She has also emphasized the need for religious leaders to educate the youth about the dangers of drug abuse, while simultaneously instilling in them the teachings of Sufis and spiritual saints. Her engagements often involve meetings with local delegations and public gatherings, where she stresses the importance of a holistic approach to guide the younger generation towards a drug-free, violence-free, and morally responsible society living in harmony.
