Karnataka Ex-CM Bommai Emphasizes Vishwakarma Community’s Pivotal Role in Nation-Building

Former Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai recently underscored the significant contributions of the Vishwakarma community to nation-building, highlighting their integral role in shaping society and preserving cultural heritage. Bommai’s remarks were made during an event organized to felicitate achievers from the community, drawing attention to their importance in the country’s ongoing progress.

Bommai’s address centered on the inherent artistry and craftsmanship of the Vishwakarma community, comparing their creative abilities to divine gifts. He drew parallels between the community’s capacity to sculpt and create, referencing their traditional role in crafting deities, and the broader concept of national development. According to details received by The Chenab Times, he stated that while the Vishwakarma community has sometimes been placed at lower societal rungs, their foundational role in civilization warrants greater esteem. He emphasized that a nation that fails to value its culture and traditions ultimately lacks respect on the global stage.

The former Chief Minister also made reference to the Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Yojana, a national initiative designed to provide financial aid and promote traditional skills. This scheme, he noted, was established to support artisans and craftspeople, acknowledging their economic impact. Information available with The Chenab Times indicated that Bommai, during his tenure, had announced budget allocations for various crafts and implemented loan-subsidy schemes aimed at fostering economic growth from the grassroots by supporting laborers and small-scale artisans. He asserted that the legacy of the Vishwakarma community’s work would endure as long as the world exists.

The event, which celebrated the accomplishments within the Vishwakarma community, was attended by several dignitaries, including Jnanpith awardee Dr. Chandrashekara Kambar and spiritual leaders Shiv Sajjana Mahaswamy and Virendra Swamiji. Their presence highlighted the community’s influence across diverse sectors, from the arts and literature to spiritual domains. Bommai encouraged the younger generation of the community to pursue higher education and aspire to join elite civil services like the IAS and IPS, thereby contributing to national progress through public service. He reinforced the idea that economic advancement is not solely dependent on the wealthy but is substantially boosted by the efforts of workers across all societal strata.

Basavaraj Bommai, who holds a degree in mechanical engineering from Hubli, has professional experience as an agriculturist and industrialist. He served as the 17th Chief Minister of Karnataka from July 2021 to May 2023. His previous roles include ministerial positions such as Minister of Home Affairs, Law, and Parliamentary Affairs. He has also been elected four times as the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Shiggaon. Bommai’s father, S. R. Bommai, also served as Chief Minister of Karnataka, marking them as a notable father-son political lineage in the state. Bommai began his political journey with the Janata Dal before transitioning to the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2008. His public addresses frequently emphasize cultural heritage, societal contributions, and the significance of traditional communities in India’s development trajectory.

The Vishwakarma community, often referred to as the divine architect, traditionally includes skilled artisans such as carpenters, goldsmiths, blacksmiths, and stonemasons. Their contributions are vital to the construction and embellishment of historical structures, palaces, and public works across India, reflecting a deep connection to the nation’s cultural and architectural evolution. The transmission of their skills through generations has preserved traditional techniques and craftsmanship. The recognition of their role in nation-building aligns with broader national efforts to acknowledge and support traditional occupations and the communities that uphold them. These artisans are considered crucial contributors to India’s rich cultural mosaic and economic development, embodying a synthesis of artistic talent and practical utility.

This focus on the Vishwakarma community underscores a wider acknowledgment of the contributions made by various skilled labor groups to the Indian economy and society. The emphasis on their role in nation-building suggests a governmental approach that values traditional craftsmanship and seeks to integrate these communities more prominently into national development narratives. Initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Yojana are designed to provide a social safety net and promote entrepreneurship among these artisans, thereby empowering them to contribute further to the nation’s growth and the preservation of its cultural heritage. The sentiments articulated by Bommai echo a broader national discourse on recognizing and uplifting the communities that form the bedrock of India’s diverse economy and heritage.
