Kashigaon police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against a contractor, sub-contractor, and safety engineer in connection with a fatal crane collapse incident in Mira Road, a suburb of Mumbai. The FIR has been filed under charges of causing death by negligence, following a preliminary inquiry that indicated a lapse in safety measures at the construction site.
Crane Collapse Claims Life of Young Man
The tragic incident occurred on Thursday when a crane, estimated to be over 100 feet tall, toppled from the 11th floor of an under-construction multi-level parking building at the JK Iris project in Mira-Bhayandar. The massive structure crashed onto a neighboring residential building, resulting in the death of 21-year-old Muzammil Khokar, a resident of the adjacent building. Khokar was reportedly struck by the falling crane while he was in the building’s compound.
The accident also led to injuries for at least two other individuals, including a woman and the crane operator, who sustained serious injuries. Several vehicles parked near the construction site were also damaged in the collapse.
Victim’s Family Demands Justice
Following the incident, the family of Muzammil Khokar, along with local residents, staged a protest, demanding that the builder be included in the FIR. They alleged that repeated complaints regarding the potential hazard posed by the crane, which was installed between two residential buildings, were ignored by the contractor and builder. The victim’s father, Aziz Khokar, who works as a stunt master in films, refused to accept his son’s body until justice was served and the real culprits were brought to book. He expressed his determination to fight for his son’s justice, stating he would not rest until the builder was held accountable.
The Kashigaon police stated that an FIR was registered after a prima facie inquiry found that the responsible parties had allegedly failed to implement necessary safety protocols at the construction site where the crane was in operation. While an Accidental Death Report (ADR) was initially registered, the escalating demands and the preliminary findings prompted the registration of the FIR against the contractor and others involved.
Investigation Underway
Police sources indicated that the crane was operational at the time of the mishap, and investigators are examining the possibility that the operator may have lost control, leading to the collapse. The injured crane operator is currently undergoing treatment and is being questioned as part of the ongoing investigation. Authorities are working to ascertain the exact cause of the crane collapse and to determine if there were any lapses in the safety measures implemented by the construction company, JP Infra, at the JK North complex.
The incident has raised serious questions about safety standards at construction sites in the region and has led to calls for stricter enforcement of regulations to prevent future tragedies. The investigation is expected to delve into the maintenance records of the crane, the qualifications of the operating personnel, and the overall safety management system in place at the project site.
