Pune and its surrounding ghat regions are on high alert as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red warning for Wednesday, July 22, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall. This alert signifies the highest level of weather warning, urging authorities and residents to “Take Action” due to the potential for hazardous weather conditions that could disrupt normal life.

Intense Rainfall Expected Across Ghats

The IMD’s red alert, valid from 8:30 am on July 22 to 8:30 am on July 23, specifically targets the ghat sections of Pune district. Authorities anticipate heavy to very heavy rainfall in several ghat areas, with the possibility of extremely heavy downpours in isolated locations. This intensified monsoon activity is attributed to a trough or low-pressure line extending from a cyclonic circulation over the West Central Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Coastal Andhra Pradesh to the North-East Arabian Sea. This system is enhancing moisture-laden winds from the Arabian Sea towards Maharashtra, contributing to the vigorous monsoon conditions.

Specific rainfall data from the past 24 hours leading up to Wednesday morning indicates the severity of the ongoing precipitation. Tamhini, a region known for receiving significant rainfall, recorded 275 mm, while other ghat stations like Bhira reported 309 mm. Lonavala experienced 142 mm, Shirgaon 255 mm, and Dawdi 264 mm, among other substantial amounts, highlighting the widespread heavy rainfall across the ghats.

The IMD has also issued orange alerts for the ghats of Nashik, Satara, and Kolhapur, indicating a similar pattern of heavy to very heavy rainfall in these neighbouring regions. The forecast suggests that these intense conditions might persist for the next 48 hours, with the alert levels expected to ease gradually after July 22.

Impact and Advisory

The intense rainfall in the ghats poses several risks, including flash floods, landslides, mudslides, and rockfalls, especially in hilly and vulnerable areas. Reduced visibility on roads, slippery conditions, and temporary inundation in low-lying areas are anticipated, potentially causing significant disruptions to traffic and daily commutes. While the ghats are facing a red alert, Pune city itself is expected to receive light to moderate showers, mainly during the afternoon, with a slight drop in temperatures over the next two days. In light of the weather warnings, authorities have cautioned against visiting ghat sections due to the likelihood of heavy rainfall and potential hazards. The active monsoon conditions are expected to continue across Madhya Maharashtra, with similar weather patterns anticipated in surrounding regions like Konkan and Goa, which are under orange alerts for isolated very heavy rain.

Meteorologists have noted that atmospheric conditions, including the formation of an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal, are contributing to the intensification of the monsoon over Maharashtra and neighbouring states. Rainfall is predicted to remain intense through the week, with some projections suggesting a potential easing of rainfall after July 26, depending on the movement of weather systems.
