A woman was killed and 20 others sustained injuries after a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus veered off the road and fell into a ditch on the outskirts of Dharwad on Wednesday, July 22, 2026. The accident occurred due to a suspected mechanical failure, possibly a tyre burst, which caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
The deceased has been identified as Hasanabi Kengannavar, 60, a resident of Munavalli in Saundatti taluk of Belagavi district. The injured were admitted to the district civil hospital in Dharwad for treatment. According to reports, two of the injured are in critical condition.
The KSRTC bus was reportedly traveling from Davangere to Miraj when the incident took place near Amminabhavi village. Eyewitnesses and local residents rushed to the scene to assist in the rescue operations. The impact of the fall caused significant damage to the bus, shattering windows and crushing its front portion.
Police from the Dharwad Rural Police Station arrived at the site to conduct an inspection and initiate an investigation into the exact cause of the accident. Preliminary investigations suggest that a tyre burst might have led to the driver losing control. This incident has once again highlighted the persistent concerns regarding road safety in the region.
While the provided information is limited, further details are expected to emerge as the police investigation progresses.
