Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar paid homage to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the 1999 Kargil War, stating that their bravery and sacrifice form the bedrock of India’s freedom and security. Addressing a commemorative event on Kargil Vijay Diwas, Shivakumar reiterated the state government’s commitment to the welfare of ex-servicemen and their families.
Soldiers’ Sacrifice Foundation of Freedom
Speaking at the National Military Memorial in Bengaluru, Chief Minister Shivakumar stated, “Our soldiers’ sacrifices are our courage, our freedom, and our pride.” He added that the nation remembers the brave warriors who defeated the enemy in the Himalayas and hoisted the Tricolour 27 years ago. He offered his heartfelt tributes to all the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the nation, noting that 527 soldiers were martyred in the Kargil War, including 13 from Karnataka.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the Chief Minister highlighted the unwavering role of the Indian armed forces in consistently defending the country’s borders under all circumstances, whether during India-Pakistan wars, India-China conflicts, or instances of border incursions. He emphasized that soldiers stand ready every moment of every day to protect the nation with courage and determination.
Karnataka’s Crucial Role in Defence Ecosystem
Chief Minister Shivakumar underscored Karnataka’s significant contribution to India’s defence sector, describing the state as the backbone of the country’s defence establishment. He pointed to the presence of premier institutions such as Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML), ISRO, and DRDO within the state, all of which play a vital role in bolstering national defence capabilities. The Chief Minister also recalled the distinguished service of Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa, India’s first Commander-in-Chief.
During his address, Shivakumar drew a parallel between different segments of society and the nation’s strength, likening soldiers, youth, women, farmers, and taxpayers to the five fingers of a hand. He articulated that when these five elements unite, they form a formidable fist that protects and propels the nation forward. He also stressed that the youth of the country, much like the armed forces, have demonstrated a firm resolve to protect the spirit of freedom, asserting that no internal or external forces will be allowed to diminish India’s independent spirit.
Commitment to Soldier Welfare
The Chief Minister appealed to the families of the fallen soldiers, encouraging them to provide any suggestions for improving their welfare. He assured that the government’s doors are always open to support the families of brave soldiers and expressed readiness to accept constructive advice from all quarters. The event also saw participation from Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge and retired servicemen, underscoring the collective respect and remembrance for the Kargil War heroes.
