Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Tuesday outlined an ambitious vision for the state’s healthcare sector, aiming to transform it into a leading hub within the next ten years. He asserted that the government is committed to bolstering health infrastructure through technological advancements and expanded access to quality medical care.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the Chief Minister made these remarks during the inauguration of the new academic block of Dr Radhakrishnan Government Medical College at Jolsappar, near Hamirpur. He emphasized a shift from traditional healthcare methods to the adoption of advanced medical technologies to enhance service delivery across the state.
The government’s strategic objective is to position Himachal Pradesh as a preferred destination for medical treatment, attracting patients from across the country. To realize this goal, the state is investing in state-of-the-art medical equipment, including MRI and 3-Tesla MRI machines, which are being installed at various medical colleges. These installations are intended to provide residents with improved treatment options closer to their homes, thereby reducing the need for extensive travel for specialized medical attention.
Furthermore, the Chief Minister highlighted the introduction of robotic surgery facilities at four medical colleges, marking a significant advancement in surgical capabilities within the state. The establishment of automated laboratories at each medical college, with an estimated investment of Rs 30 crore per institution, is also underway. These facilities are expected to enhance diagnostic accuracy and efficiency, contributing to better patient outcomes.
Addressing the need for adequate medical personnel, Sukhu stated that the recruitment of doctors is an ongoing process aimed at strengthening the healthcare workforce. The state government is also exploring the possibility of relaxing bond requirements for doctors who wish to pursue postgraduate medical education, a move that could incentivize specialists to serve in Himachal Pradesh.
During his address, Chief Minister Sukhu also directed criticism towards leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) concerning the establishment of the Dr Radhakrishnan Government Medical College and Hospital at Jolsappar. He attributed the institution’s sanction to the UPA government under the leadership of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, with an initial allocation of Rs 189 crore. Sukhu alleged that the central government subsequently failed to provide further funds and delayed the project’s progress. He stated that his administration has since released over Rs 300 crore to expedite its completion.
The Chief Minister specifically questioned the contribution of former Union Minister Anurag Thakur to the medical college’s development, accusing him of making unsubstantiated claims. Sukhu suggested that Thakur could have utilized his position to expedite essential clearances from central agencies required for the construction and operationalization of the institution, implying a lack of proactive support from the BJP leadership.
