Manipur Hockey Star Nilakanta Sharma Announces International Retirement

Indian international hockey player Nilakanta Sharma, a prominent midfielder from Manipur, has announced his retirement from international hockey after a career spanning nine years and 163 caps. The 31-year-old made the announcement following India’s dominant 13-0 victory over Bangladesh in the opening match of the ongoing Asian Champions Trophy (ACT) in Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium, Punjab. The ongoing tournament will mark his final assignment with the national team.

Farewell from Teammates and Aspirations for Future Generations

In a touching gesture, Sharma’s teammates tossed him into the air multiple times to commemorate his significant achievements and contributions to Indian hockey. His decision, though emotional for fans, was anticipated as part of a strategic ‘smooth transition’ process for the national team, gearing up for preparations towards the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Sharma is among a group of seasoned players, including Mandeep Singh, Jarmanpreet Singh, and Amit Rohidas, whose potential retirements have been part of strategic discussions.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that Sharma, a native of Kontha Ahallup village in the Imphal East district of Manipur, had discussions about his retirement plans with the coach during the recent Asian Games. He expressed a desire to conclude his international career in a tournament where he could bid farewell on his own terms. The coach reportedly agreed, contingent on the team securing gold at the Nagoya Asian Games and qualifying for the 2028 Olympics. Sharma stated that without achieving these goals, he might not have had the opportunity to play in his final tournament.

A Stellar Career Marked by Olympic and Asian Games Success

Sharma’s journey to the pinnacle of international hockey began in his home village, and he went on to become a vital player for India. He was a key member of the squad that clinched the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics, a historic achievement that ended India’s 41-year wait for an Olympic hockey medal. His contributions also extend to the gold-medal-winning campaigns at the 2022 and 2026 Asian Games.

His promising junior career saw him excel in the 2015 Junior Asia Cup and play a crucial role in India’s victory at the 2016 FIH Men’s Junior World Cup held in Lucknow. Sharma made his senior international debut in 2017 against Belgium and quickly established himself as a formidable presence in the midfield. Throughout his senior career, he was part of the Indian team that shared the Asian Champions Trophy title with Pakistan in 2018, and the victorious squad at the FIH Men’s Series Finals in Bhubaneswar in 2019.

Further accolades include representing India at the 2018, 2023, and 2026 Men’s Hockey World Cups. He also secured a silver medal at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, underscoring his consistent performance on the international stage. Sharma reflected on the Olympic bronze medal as one of the most significant moments of his career, expressing immense satisfaction with his decision to retire.

Focus Shifts to Grassroots Development in Manipur

Following his Olympic success, Sharma was offered a position within the Manipur Sports Department. Upon his retirement, Sharma has expressed a strong desire to return to his home state and dedicate his expertise to training young aspiring hockey players. He believes this is the ideal time for him to transition from playing to coaching, allowing him to nurture the next generation of talent in Manipur.

Sharma articulated his satisfaction with his decision to retire on his own terms, avoiding the situation where players continue to play past their prime and face abrupt dismissals. He feels fortunate to have had the opportunity to bid farewell while still actively playing and contributing to the team’s success, as demonstrated in his recent Asian Games appearances.

Hockey India Acknowledges Contributions

Hockey India Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh lauded Nilakanta Sharma’s tenure with the Indian team, stating that his contributions have been invaluable and will always be appreciated. He highlighted Sharma’s commitment, hard work, and tactical understanding of the game as instrumental in India’s successes on the global stage. On behalf of Hockey India, Bhola Nath Singh extended gratitude for Sharma’s service and wished him the very best for his future endeavors.
