A section of National Highway 205, a crucial artery connecting Bilaspur with Shimla in Himachal Pradesh, experienced a partial collapse on Tuesday, leading to traffic disruptions and diversions.
The incident occurred near Khatola village in Bilaspur district amidst ongoing four-laning work on the highway. Authorities immediately rerouted traffic to alternative routes to prevent further complications and ensure the safety of commuters.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that vehicles destined for Shimla from the Nauni/Brahmpukhar side are now being directed via the Jabalpur–Kharsi route. Conversely, traffic heading towards Bilaspur from Shimla is being rerouted through the Darlamod–Malokhar–Kharsi route. The police have been actively disseminating traffic advisories and urging commuters to adhere to the designated alternative paths.
The Superintendent of Police for Bilaspur, Abhishek Dhiman, issued a statement appealing to travellers to follow the police’s instructions and utilize the alternative routes provided. This measure aims to manage the flow of vehicles efficiently and minimize inconvenience.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) acknowledged the road settlement observed on the old National Highway. In an official statement, the NHAI confirmed that it is continuously monitoring the affected stretch, particularly in light of the monsoon season, which can exacerbate such issues. The authority emphasized its commitment to ensuring the stability and safety of the highway infrastructure.
The NHAI has also appealed to commuters to exercise caution while using the road and to cooperate with the officials on duty. The ongoing four-laning project, while intended to improve connectivity and reduce travel times, has presented challenges that require careful management during its execution. Similar incidents of road subsidence have been reported in various hilly regions during periods of heavy rainfall and intensive construction work.
The affected highway serves as a vital link for both local populations and tourists traveling between the major towns of Bilaspur and Shimla. The diversion is expected to cause minor delays, and authorities are working to expedite repairs and restore normal traffic flow as quickly as possible. Road infrastructure projects in mountainous terrains often face unique challenges, including geological instability and weather-related factors, which necessitate robust monitoring and mitigation strategies.
The incident underscores the importance of continuous geological assessment and advanced engineering techniques in the construction and maintenance of highways in landslide-prone and geologically sensitive areas. The NHAI’s proactive monitoring and the police’s swift response in diverting traffic are crucial steps in managing the immediate impact of the road collapse. Further investigations into the exact cause of the subsidence are likely to be conducted to inform future construction practices and maintenance protocols.
