A new documentary titled “Wild Inside” is set to premiere, offering a comprehensive look at the extraordinary life of Flaco, the Eurasian eagle-owl who captivated New York City after escaping from the Central Park Zoo. The film chronicles Flaco’s journey from his enclosure to his year of freedom in Manhattan, culminating in his tragic death in February 2024.
Flaco, who had resided at the Central Park Zoo since 2010, escaped his exhibit on February 2, 2023, after his enclosure’s protective netting was deliberately cut by an unknown vandal. His disappearance sparked widespread concern among zoo staff and the public, many of whom feared for his ability to survive in an urban environment, particularly given his decade in captivity. Despite initial fears that Flaco would struggle to hunt and fly effectively, he proved to be a resilient survivor.
Local birdwatchers and New Yorkers closely followed Flaco’s movements across Manhattan, documenting his hunting successes, which included consuming the city’s abundant rat population. This unexpected adaptation to urban wildlife earned him a devoted following, with thousands rooting for his continued freedom. The owl’s captivating presence inspired art, merchandise, and even tattoos among his admirers.
The documentary “Wild Inside,” directed by Penny Lane, utilizes footage contributed by New York birders and interviews with residents who developed an affection for Flaco. It delves into the nature versus nurture debate, exploring themes of freedom and the human experience of urban nature. The film also touches upon the circumstances of Flaco’s death, which occurred after he apparently collided with a building on West 89th Street. Postmortem examinations revealed that in addition to the traumatic injuries from the collision, Flaco had ingested rat poison and contracted a severe case of pigeon herpesvirus.
The initial escape of Flaco led to extensive efforts by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), which operates the Central Park Zoo, to recapture him. However, after two weeks, with Flaco demonstrating his ability to survive and thrive, the WCS suspended its recapture attempts, resigning to monitoring his progress.
The narrative of Flaco’s year of freedom in the concrete jungle of New York City has been described as a modern fairy tale, highlighting the unexpected ways nature can adapt and persist even in the most urbanized settings. The film’s premiere is scheduled for a special outdoor screening in Central Park on July 29, with a wider theatrical release to follow at the IFC Center on July 31.
