Russia launched a series of large-scale missile and drone attacks across Ukraine in the early hours of Thursday, killing at least eight people and injuring dozens. The assaults targeted multiple regions, including Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, and Lviv, causing widespread damage to civilian homes and infrastructure.
According to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the attacks involved over 70 missiles, a significant portion of which were ballistic, and more than 280 drones. Ukrainian air defense forces managed to intercept more than 260 drones, but the effectiveness of their response was hampered by a critical shortage of interceptor missiles, Zelenskyy stated.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that in the Dnipropetrovsk region, a missile strike on Radushne destroyed a residential house, killing a family of five, including three children. Two more children were rescued alive from the rubble. In Lviv, western Ukraine, a strike on a residential building injured 30 people, and rescue operations were ongoing to clear rubble and search for survivors. In the capital, Kyiv, one death was confirmed, with several districts reporting fires.
The attacks come amid escalating tensions and follow Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s recent diplomatic efforts, including a visit to the United States where joint production of air defense systems was discussed. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly highlighted the urgent need for more advanced air defense systems and interceptor missiles from international partners to counter the persistent Russian aerial bombardments.
The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that the strikes targeted airfields, military communication facilities, and logistics centers. However, the widespread damage to civilian areas, including residential buildings, schools, and kindergartens, has led to accusations of terror tactics. In Lviv alone, over 20 residential buildings, a school, and two kindergartens sustained damage.
Zelenskyy emphasized that despite the limitations in air defense capabilities, Ukrainian forces were performing exceptionally well. He reiterated the call for allies to provide additional anti-ballistic missiles, stating that protection against the Russian missile threat is paramount for saving lives. Neighboring Poland scrambled fighter jets to secure its airspace as the attacks extended towards its borders.
The Ukrainian military continues to engage in deep strikes against Russian territory, targeting military logistics and infrastructure. Russia, in turn, has intensified its aerial bombardment of Ukrainian cities and towns. The ongoing conflict has seen a significant use of drones and missiles by both sides, with Ukraine developing its own drone technology and seeking advanced Western air defense systems like the U.S.-made Patriot and European SAMP-T, though supply and production challenges persist.
Recent reports indicate that Ukraine is also collaborating on European initiatives for a shared ballistic missile shield and developing its indigenous defense projects. However, these efforts are not expected to fully address the immediate crisis of air defense missile shortages. The international community has expressed concern over the continued escalation and the humanitarian impact of the prolonged conflict, with calls for a peaceful resolution and increased humanitarian aid.
