Srinagar: U.S. Ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asia, Sergio Gor, arrived in Srinagar on Wednesday for a two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir. This marks Gor’s first visit to the region since assuming his diplomatic role earlier this year and his first visit to Jammu and Kashmir since it was designated as a Union Territory in 2019.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, Ambassador Gor is scheduled to meet with Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah during his stay in the Valley. Following his engagements in Srinagar, the Ambassador is expected to travel to Ladakh on Thursday.
The visit is significant as it is the first by a top U.S. diplomat to the region since the constitutional changes of 2019, which revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir and divided it into two Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. The region has been a focal point of political activity and regional parties have been advocating for the restoration of special status and statehood.
Officials have stated that the meetings with Lieutenant Governor Sinha and Chief Minister Abdullah are expected to cover discussions on the prevailing security, economic, and developmental situation in the Union Territory. While the official itinerary has not been fully disclosed, it is understood that diplomatic circles are closely watching this visit, underscoring Washington’s continued engagement with India and its strategic interests in South and Central Asia.
The U.S. Embassy in New Delhi had not provided extensive details regarding Gor’s travel plans. However, the visit comes amidst ongoing geopolitical developments in the region. The region has historically been a source of tension between India and Pakistan.
Kashmir’s chief cleric, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, welcomed the Ambassador’s visit, expressing hope that Gor would engage with a broad cross-section of people to understand the concerns and aspirations of the residents of Jammu and Kashmir. Similarly, PDP leader and former Minister Naeem Akhtar described the visit as a significant development, particularly given Gor’s role as the special envoy to South and Central Asia.
Ambassador Gor formally assumed his charge as the 27th U.S. Ambassador to India on January 14, 2026. Previous U.S. diplomats, including former Ambassador Kenneth Juster, have visited Kashmir in the past, sometimes as part of delegations, and have engaged with various political and separatist leaders. However, reports suggest that Gor’s current visit is focused on official engagements with government and political leaders, diverging from some past practices of meeting separatist factions.
Security measures have been heightened across Srinagar in anticipation of the Ambassador’s visit, with embassy officials already present in the region to facilitate arrangements for the planned meetings.
