Five people have died and several others sustained injuries in a massive explosion at a firecracker factory in Kaushambi district of Uttar Pradesh on Monday. The powerful blast reduced the factory to rubble and caused significant damage to nearby residential structures.
According to initial reports, the explosion occurred in the Pipri police station area near the Manori power house. The intensity of the blast was such that it damaged five to six houses located in close proximity to the factory, leading to their collapse. The sound of the explosion was reportedly heard up to two kilometers away, and a large plume of smoke rose into the sky, engulfing the surrounding area.
Rescue operations were immediately launched, with police, fire brigade personnel, and administrative teams from both Kaushambi and Prayagraj districts reaching the scene. Several fire tenders were deployed to control the blaze, and earthmoving equipment was brought in to clear the debris in search of individuals who might be trapped. Air Force personnel also assisted in the rescue efforts.
The injured have been shifted to hospitals, with some of the seriously wounded referred to SRN Hospital in Prayagraj for advanced treatment. The exact number of casualties and injured is expected to be clarified once the rescue and relief operations are fully completed.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety standards in such manufacturing units. While the exact cause of the explosion is under investigation, preliminary inquiries suggest that a large stockpile of firecrackers may have triggered the blast. Authorities have registered cases against accused individuals, including the warehouse owner, and are reportedly considering demolishing their warehouses as part of the punitive actions.
The administration has announced financial assistance for the families of those who lost their lives and for those who sustained injuries in the incident. The blast also affected railway operations on the nearby Delhi-Howrah line, with train services temporarily suspended as a precautionary measure.
