The gallery offers a distinct perspective on Kangra paintings, moving beyond traditional representations of royal courts, religious themes, and established artistic motifs. It aims to highlight the nuances of everyday life, folk traditions, and the rural environment that shaped Pahari society. During the inauguration ceremony, Governor Gupta emphasized the significance of Kangra paintings as embodiments of the region’s civilisation and cultural identity.

He noted the shared cultural and civilisational affinities among the Himalayan states of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, asserting that these commonalities are effectively articulated through the region’s diverse painting styles. The Governor observed that the Himalayan region serves as a confluence of both ancient and contemporary artistic traditions in painting.

Governor Gupta expressed optimism that the newly established gallery would serve as a vital platform for domestic and international tourists to gain a deeper understanding of the civilisation, culture, and artistic legacy of the Indian hill regions. He highlighted the gallery’s specific focus on illustrating Pahari community life, rural activities, folk music, traditional customs, and the symbiotic relationship between local communities and the natural environment, all through the medium of miniature painting.

During the event, the Governor also released a book titled ‘Folk and Rural Imagery in Kangra Miniatures: An Indigenous Indian Art Perspective’. This publication, co-authored by Himanshu Kumar Chaturvedi and Pankaj Gupta, is dedicated to exploring Kangra miniature paintings. The book is presented as a significant contribution towards comprehending Pahari folk life, rural landscapes, and local cultural experiences as depicted in these miniature artworks.

Furthermore, the Governor unveiled a bust of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the esteemed founder of the Indian Institute of Advanced Study. Governor Gupta remarked on Dr Radhakrishnan’s lasting impact on philosophy, education, and the pursuit of knowledge. The presence of his bust on the institute’s grounds, he stated, serves as a constant reminder of the enduring values of scholarship and intellectual inquiry that the institution upholds.

The inauguration marks a significant step in promoting and preserving the cultural heritage of Himachal Pradesh, particularly its contribution to Indian miniature art. The gallery at IIAS is expected to draw attention from art historians, researchers, and the public alike, fostering a greater appreciation for Kangra paintings and their cultural context. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to conserve and promote indigenous art forms across the country, ensuring their continuity for future generations.
