Ministry of Home Affairs Warns of Financial Fraud Via Fake Pornography Apps

New Delhi: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has issued a stern warning regarding a significant increase in financial fraud orchestrated through malicious Android applications disguised as pornography apps. These applications are being circulated predominantly via advertisements on social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, using names like Night Play, Reloop, Kyss, Vimo, Rivo, Nexo, and Vixa, among other similar variants.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that these malicious advertisements typically redirect unsuspecting users to websites hosting pornographic content. Upon visiting these sites, users are prompted to download APK files, which are not available through official app stores like the Google Play Store. Once installed, these applications aggressively seek sensitive permissions, crucially including Accessibility access.

Granting Accessibility access to these rogue applications effectively allows attackers to gain comprehensive control over the user’s device. This control can then be exploited to conduct various forms of financial fraud. Some of these malicious applications may also engage in covertly downloading additional packages, often by masquerading as legitimate app updates. Furthermore, they might install a Virtual Private Network (VPN) that reroutes the user’s internet traffic through servers controlled by the attackers, potentially compromising online activities and sensitive data.

A concerning feature reported by the Ministry is the ability of some of these applications to prevent users from uninstalling them through standard device settings, making removal a challenging task. In response to this escalating threat, the Ministry has released an advisory urging citizens to install applications exclusively from trusted sources such as the Google Play Store or other reputable app stores.

The advisory strongly advises against downloading APK files from advertisements, unverified websites, or suspicious links. It also reiterates the importance of refraining from granting Accessibility permission to any unknown or untrusted applications. Citizens who suspect they may have installed such an application are advised to carefully verify their device and ensure the suspicious application has been completely removed. In situations where the app cannot be uninstalled through normal means or reappears after a device restart, users are instructed to back up their essential data and then perform a factory reset of their device to ensure complete eradication of the malware.

The National Cybercrime Threat Analytics Unit of the MHA is actively monitoring these trends to safeguard citizens from digital financial exploitation. The Ministry’s proactive stance aims to educate the public and provide actionable steps to mitigate the risks associated with these deceptive mobile applications.
