NEW DELHI: The India-Afghanistan Joint Working Group (JWG) on Trade, Commerce and Investment convened a virtual meeting on September 1, 2026, to review existing measures and identify new avenues for strengthening bilateral economic cooperation.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that officials from both nations, representing commerce, industry, customs, regulatory bodies, and diplomatic missions, participated in the constructive deliberations. The meeting focused on a comprehensive review of issues pertinent to bilateral trade, with an emphasis on enhancing commercial engagement.
Discussions encompassed a wide array of critical areas aimed at facilitating smoother trade relations. Key among these were measures for trade facilitation and customs cooperation, streamlining visa procedures for Afghan traders, and bolstering banking and financial collaborations. The parties also explored opportunities in pharmaceutical and agricultural trade, energy cooperation, investment promotion, and enhancing business-to-business connections.
The JWG also addressed crucial logistical aspects such as tariff concessions, improving cargo connectivity, and port-related efficiencies. Both delegations acknowledged the importance of institutional cooperation and committed to implementing follow-up actions in the identified sectors. Enhanced customs procedures, data-sharing mechanisms, and regulatory alignment in sectors like pharmaceuticals and agriculture were specifically highlighted as priorities.
Furthermore, the meeting underscored the mutual commitment to fostering robust trade, commerce, and investment ties between India and Afghanistan. Both sides agreed to maintain continuous dialogue and engagement to address ongoing issues and explore future collaborative projects.
