Amritsar: A 19-year-old girl has allegedly been killed by her father, who subsequently buried her body in a pit dug in the backyard of their residence in the Mattewal police station area of Amritsar, Punjab. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting a police investigation.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the grim discovery was made after the victim’s mother, Sarabjit Kaur, became concerned when her daughter, Navneet Kaur, failed to respond to her phone calls. The mother reported that Navneet had last contacted her on August 31, mentioning that her father was digging a pit behind their house. Subsequent attempts to reach her daughter proved unsuccessful.
According to the mother’s statement to the police, her husband had harboured suspicions about their daughter’s conduct, leading to frequent altercations. She further alleged that the accused had previously threatened Navneet and demanded that she leave the family home. The family had reportedly been experiencing significant discord related to their elder daughter, who had married approximately eight months prior after eloping.
Police sources revealed that Sarabjit Kaur, upon visiting the family home on Wednesday, observed fresh earth at the location her daughter had indicated a pit was being dug. This observation intensified her suspicions, leading her to contact the authorities. Following the mother’s alert, police utilized a JCB excavator to excavate the site, where they recovered the body of Navneet Kaur.
Daljit Singh, Station House Officer (SHO) of Mattewal police station, confirmed that the body had been taken into possession, and further legal proceedings have been initiated. He stated that Sarabjit Kaur provided a formal statement alleging that her husband had murdered their daughter one or two days prior to the discovery and subsequently buried her remains.
Based on the mother’s statement, a case has been registered against the father. The accused is reported to have fled the scene after the alleged incident. Police teams are currently conducting raids in an effort to apprehend him. The precise cause of death and the full circumstances surrounding the alleged killing are expected to be determined through the ongoing investigation and the post-mortem examination of the deceased.
