JAMMU, September 5: A drug peddler has been apprehended and lodged in jail in the Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir under the stringent Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act. The move aims to curb the individual’s alleged involvement in narcotics trafficking.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, the convicted individual, identified as Jasbir Singh, a resident of Chak Drab Khan village, was implicated in three separate First Information Reports (FIRs). These cases were registered at the Police Station Kathua under various sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in the years 2018, 2022, and a pending one for 2026.
A spokesperson for the police department stated that a comprehensive dossier was prepared against Singh to prevent his continued engagement in illegal narcotics activities. This dossier was subsequently forwarded to the Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, recommending his detention under the PIT-NDPS Act. Following the review and approval process, the Divisional Commissioner issued a detention warrant against Singh, which was then executed, leading to his incarceration.
In a separate incident occurring early Saturday morning in the Kathua district, police apprehended another drug peddler in the Galak area of Ramkot, within the Billawar tehsil. During the interception, authorities recovered seven grams of heroin from the individual, who was identified as Arjun. He was reportedly moving under suspicious circumstances when law enforcement officials intercepted him, leading to the discovery of the contraband.
The arrested peddler, Arjun, has been booked under the provisions of the NDPS Act. Further investigations are reportedly underway to ascertain the source of the recovered heroin and to identify any potential links to broader drug trafficking networks operating in the region. The Kathua police have emphasized their commitment to combating the drug menace in the district through stringent enforcement measures and legal action against those involved.
The PIT-NDPS Act allows for the detention of individuals involved in drug trafficking to prevent them from engaging in such activities in the future. This legislation is considered a powerful tool for law enforcement agencies in Jammu and Kashmir to tackle the persistent challenge posed by illicit drug trade.
