Project Vijayak of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) commenced its 16th Raising Day celebrations with a motorcycle rally from Kargil to Sapi La Pass in the Union Territory of Ladakh. The event, which began on Sunday, saw 51 participants embark on the journey from the Project Vijayak Memorial in Kargil.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the rally was flagged off by retired Colonel V.K. Oberoi from the Project Vijayak Memorial. It concluded at Sapi La, situated at an elevation of 14,337 feet. The occasion was graced by Brigadier Sarit Prakash, Deputy General Officer Commanding of the 8th Mountain Division, Brigadier Rahul Oberoi, Chief Engineer of Project Vijayak, and Brigadier Ashish Joshi, Commander of the 121 Infantry Brigade, along with other officers and personnel from the Army, Project Vijayak, and civilian participants.
Project Vijayak was established on September 21, 2010, in response to recommendations from the Kargil War Review Committee. Its primary objective is to enhance connectivity throughout the Ladakh region, with a particular focus on improving access to forward areas and military posts. The project has been instrumental in bolstering road infrastructure across the challenging terrain of Ladakh.
According to Brigadier Rahul Oberoi, Project Vijayak has significantly contributed to the region’s road network. Numerous roads have undergone widening and upgrades from single-lane to double-lane standards, and new roads have been constructed to facilitate better connectivity to remote forward locations. The project has also focused on improving the specifications and standards of National Highways, with several tunnel projects currently in various stages of development.
Brigadier Oberoi further stated that motorcycle rallies are a yearly tradition as part of Project Vijayak’s Raising Day festivities. These rallies serve as a commemoration and tribute to the personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the nation and contributing to the development of crucial road infrastructure in the Himalayas. Last year’s rally paid homage to the fallen soldiers at the Kargil War Memorial in Drass.
Continuing this tradition, this year’s rally covered approximately 54 kilometres to Sapi La Pass, identified as one of the key passes maintained by Project Vijayak in Western Ladakh and the Siachen sector. The culmination of the rally at Sapi La Pass was marked by the hoisting of the National Flag by Brigadier Sarit Prakash, Deputy GOC of the 8th Mountain Division. Brigadier Oberoi described the flag-hoisting ceremony as a moment of pride and a solemn tribute to the brave personnel who laid down their lives in service of the country.
The motorcycle rally signifies the start of the celebrations leading up to the 16th Raising Day of Project Vijayak, which falls on September 21. The Border Roads Organisation plays a vital role in maintaining and developing infrastructure in strategically important and often inaccessible regions of India, contributing significantly to national security and regional development.
