Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated on Sunday that the Narendra Modi government has significantly strengthened India’s internal security, citing a notable decrease in terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, the weakening of Naxalism, and progress in the northeastern states.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Shah highlighted the proactive measures taken by the Home Ministry since Prime Minister Narendra Modi assumed office, addressing what he identified as three primary security challenges at the time: escalating militancy in Jammu and Kashmir, the pervasive issue of Naxalism, and the presence of numerous armed groups destabilizing the Northeast.
The Union Home Minister recalled that upon Modi’s ascent to power, the nation was grappling with substantial internal security threats. These included widespread bomb blasts and large-scale public protests concerning women’s safety, in addition to the aforementioned regional security issues.
Internal Security Landscape Transformed
Shah emphasized the transformative impact of the current government’s tenure, particularly noting the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. He asserted that this move has led to a significant reduction in separatist sentiments within Jammu and Kashmir. Terrorism-related incidents in the region, according to Shah, are progressively declining and moving towards eradication, while the Union Territory is reportedly advancing on the path of development.
Furthermore, the Union Home Minister claimed that concerted efforts have successfully bridged the perceived emotional divide between Jammu and Kashmir and the rest of India. He indicated that the government’s initiatives have fostered a greater sense of national integration.
Naxalism Contained, Northeast Stabilized
Addressing the decades-long challenge of Naxalism, Shah declared it as largely a phenomenon of the past. He observed that armed groups associated with the ‘Red Corridor’—a term historically used to describe areas affected by Naxalite activity stretching across several states—have either surrendered their arms or are integrating into the mainstream society.
In the Northeast, the Home Minister reported substantial progress. Approximately 10,000 individuals have reportedly laid down their arms, and the central government has signed over 14 agreements with various armed groups in the region. This, he stated, has set the Northeast on a course of development.
