Srinagar, September 08: National Conference leader Tanvir Sadiq on Monday voiced strong support for protesting doctors in Jammu and Kashmir, asserting that their demands are legitimate and warrant prompt attention and resolution. He also unequivocally condemned any threats that may have been issued against the medical professionals.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Sadiq highlighted the acknowledgement of the issue by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and noted the personal involvement of Health Minister Sakina Itoo in addressing the matter.
“Omar Sahib said yesterday that this is certainly a genuine issue and that it needs to be resolved at the earliest,” Sadiq stated. “That is why our honourable Minister, Sakina Ji, is personally looking into it. Inshallah, we hope that a resolution will be reached as soon as possible.”
Responding to reports of threats against the striking doctors, Sadiq strongly denounced such actions, emphasizing the medical fraternity’s right to peaceful protest. He described the doctors as integral to the region, stating, “If there are threats, that is very wrong. They are our children; they are the sons and daughters of the soil.”
Sadiq reiterated that peaceful demonstration is a fundamental democratic right. “They have every right to protest. We have always said that everyone has the right to protest in a democratic manner, and they have that right too,” he remarked, assuring that efforts would continue towards finding a solution to their concerns.
His comments precede an upcoming Assembly session where the doctors’ ongoing issue is anticipated to be a significant point of discussion among members. Sadiq also commented on the expected approach of the Opposition in the Assembly, suggesting that while the BJP has the right to scrutinize the government, their focus should remain on matters of public interest.
“They do that; it is the job of the Opposition. We have no problem if they raise issues,” he said. “One thing we need to understand is that questions concerning the people are raised in the Assembly, bills are introduced and resolutions are brought.”
The National Conference leader underscored the importance of the Assembly as a platform for public discourse. “The Assembly is an important platform where we can speak about the concerns of the people,” he noted, urging the Opposition to utilize the legislative forum to advocate for public issues. “My advice would be that the Opposition should allow the issues of the people to be discussed in the Assembly and should put forward its own views. They have a right to do so, and they should certainly exercise that right.”
Sadiq also took the opportunity to reflect on the enduring legacy of National Conference founder Sheikh Abdullah, describing his contributions to Jammu and Kashmir as immeasurable. “Whatever we say in praise of Sher-e-Kashmir’s contribution to every sphere of Jammu and Kashmir and to the country is not enough,” he said.
He specifically referenced Sheikh Abdullah’s pioneering land reforms, particularly the “land to the tiller” policy, which he stated fundamentally altered the lives of the populace by bestowing land ownership upon those who cultivated it. Furthermore, Sadiq credited Sheikh Abdullah with establishing the framework that enabled successive generations of students from Jammu and Kashmir to pursue higher education both within India and internationally. He also acknowledged Abdullah’s efforts in promoting women’s representation and fostering the development of educational and agricultural institutions across the region.
