A recent discourse highlights the Islamic principle of divine creation in pairs, a fundamental concept found throughout the universe as ordained by Allah (SwT). This principle, detailed in the Quran, posits that nearly all of creation exists in complementary or opposing pairs, with the exception of Allah Himself.

The Quranic verse 36:36 is often cited in discussions of this concept, stating, “Glory to Allah, exalted beyond all, Who created pairs in all things that the earth produces, as well as their own selves (human kind) and many other things of which you know nothing.” This verse delineates three broad categories of creation in pairs: those produced by the earth, human selves, and other, as yet unknown, creations.
Pairs from the Earth
The physical world exemplifies this dualistic nature in numerous ways. Pairs produced by the earth can be understood as those with differing yet comparable characteristics, such as metals and non-metals. Biologically, the distinction between male and female sexes in plants and animals represents a fundamental pairing. Furthermore, physical opposition is evident in phenomena like positively and negatively charged ions in electromagnetism, and the North and South poles of a magnet.
Pairs Within Humankind
Humanity itself is presented as a creation in pairs, encompassing the obvious biological pairing of men and women. Beyond this, the concept extends to complementary personality traits. Examples include the juxtaposition of cruel and compassionate, brave and cowardly, or generous and miserly dispositions. Even traits that appear similar can be subject to opposite value judgments, such as barbarism versus courage, or hypocrisy versus consideration, showcasing the inherent duality within human nature and experience.
Unseen Pairs and Universal Balance
The third category, encompassing “many other things of which you know nothing,” points to phenomena beyond immediate human comprehension. Turkish scholar Dr. Haluk Nurbaki, in his treatise ‘VERSES FROM GLORIOUS KORAN AND FACTS OF SCIENCES,’ speculates that these could include processes like energy emission and absorption, which modern physics and astrophysics have begun to recognize. He also suggests that forces of attraction and repulsion, such as gravitation counterbalanced by centrifugal force, might fall under this category. The absence of such opposing forces would lead to catastrophic universal imbalance, with celestial bodies either falling into their suns or being flung into outer space. This indicates that the divine design of pairs is essential for maintaining the equilibrium and stability of the universe.
The overarching theme emphasizes that the principle of creation in pairs is not merely an observable phenomenon but a foundational aspect of divine wisdom and universal order, crucial for the existence and balance of all that has been created.
