Moga, Punjab – Two cousins were killed and two others sustained severe injuries after unidentified assailants opened fire in the Angadpura neighbourhood of Moga late Sunday evening. The Punjab Police have registered a case and subsequently arrested five individuals in connection with the shooting, suspecting an old personal rivalry as the motive.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the deceased have been identified as Gagan Jindal, aged 35, and Sahil Jindal, aged 40. The injured individuals, Raghav and Somnath Jindal, are currently receiving medical treatment at a local hospital for bullet wounds.
The incident reportedly occurred as a group of four to five men were gathered outside a shop. A black Mahindra Scorpio vehicle, described as having tinted windows, arrived at the scene, and its occupants allegedly opened fire on the group before making a swift escape.
Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav, accompanied by Inspector General (Faridkot Range) Nilambari Jagdale Vijay, visited the crime scene on Monday to assess the situation and offer condolences to the bereaved family. Speaking to the media after the site inspection, DGP Yadav stated that police teams had acted with promptness following the incident.
“A case has been registered at the City South Moga Police Station based on the statement of injured Somnath Jindal. Five individuals have been taken into custody, and further investigation is under way. Strict action will be taken against every individual involved,” the DGP announced, emphasizing the commitment to bringing all perpetrators to justice.
Moga Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sartaj Singh Chahal confirmed that forensic teams were dispatched to the location to collect crucial evidence. Efforts are also underway to trace the movements of the assailants’ vehicle through the review of footage from nearby CCTV cameras.
The family of the deceased has appealed for a thorough and impartial investigation into the killings. Manish Jindal, brother of the deceased, stated that they were unaware of any personal enmity that could have led to such an attack.
However, preliminary investigations by the police indicate that the shooting may be linked to a long-standing personal rivalry. Police sources also revealed that the family had experienced another loss in November 2023, when another cousin, Vikas Jindal, died under what were described as suspicious circumstances. Furthermore, Sahil Jindal, one of the deceased, had approximately ten criminal cases registered against him, according to police records.
The Punjab Police have initiated a comprehensive investigation to unravel the full circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting and to identify all individuals involved in the crime. The focus remains on gathering evidence, questioning the apprehended suspects, and establishing the precise sequence of events that led to the tragedy in Moga.
