Shimla, Himachal Pradesh – Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur has sharply criticized the ruling Congress government in Himachal Pradesh, alleging a lack of substantial development and the discontinuation of welfare schemes initiated by the previous administration. Addressing a gathering of newly elected panchayat representatives at Nerwa in the Chopal Assembly constituency of Shimla district on Sunday, Thakur asserted that the Congress government’s tenure was nearing its end, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) poised to return to power.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Thakur accused Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu of dismantling welfare initiatives introduced by the BJP government rather than introducing new ones. He drew a comparison regarding electricity provision, stating that the BJP government had provided 125 units of free electricity, while the Congress had promised 300 units. However, Thakur claimed that consumers were now facing significant electricity bills even for the consumption of 125 units.
The Leader of Opposition further alleged that the Congress government had discontinued several popular welfare programs, including Himcare, Sahara, and Swavalamban. He contended that this move had left a large number of underprivileged and vulnerable individuals without essential medical care and financial support. The discontinuation of these schemes, according to Thakur, indicated a failure of the current government to prioritize the needs of the state’s poorest residents.
Highlighting the developmental progress in the Chopal constituency, Thakur credited the local MLA, Balbir Verma, for driving development initiatives in the area. He accused the Sukhu government of neglecting the region and halting development projects and institutions that were established during the BJP’s previous term. Thakur implied that political motivations were behind the alleged stalling of these projects, impacting the region’s growth prospects.
Thakur expressed that the Congress government had fallen short of fulfilling the public’s expectations and reiterated his conviction that the BJP would form the next government in Himachal Pradesh. He urged the newly elected panchayat representatives to work diligently for the betterment of their respective areas and assured them of the BJP’s commitment to grassroots development if returned to power. The ceremony at Nerwa saw a significant turnout of local representatives, indicating continued political engagement at the panchayat level.
The criticism comes amid ongoing political discourse in Himachal Pradesh, with both major parties, the BJP and the Congress, gearing up for future electoral contests. The Sukhu-led government, which assumed office in December 2022, has been facing scrutiny over its policy decisions and the implementation of its electoral promises. The state’s financial health and its ability to sustain ambitious welfare schemes have been central to public and political debate.
The Himcare scheme, for instance, was designed to provide health insurance cover to families not covered under Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana. Similarly, the Sahara scheme aimed to provide financial assistance to patients suffering from critical illnesses. The Swavalamban scheme focused on promoting self-employment opportunities for youth. The opposition’s critique suggests that the continuity and effectiveness of these programs are under threat, potentially affecting a significant section of the state’s population.
The allegations made by Jai Ram Thakur are likely to intensify the political rivalry between the BJP and the Congress in the state. The upcoming local body elections and the general political climate will be closely watched for further indications of public sentiment towards the current government’s performance and the opposition’s effectiveness. The BJP, as the principal opposition party, is employing various strategies to highlight perceived governance shortcomings and mobilize its support base ahead of future electoral challenges.
The political landscape of Himachal Pradesh is characterized by a strong focus on development, welfare, and fiscal management. Any perceived deviation from these priorities by the ruling party often becomes a significant point of contention for the opposition. Thakur’s remarks at Nerwa are part of a broader campaign by the BJP to hold the Congress government accountable for its actions and promises made during the election campaign.
The coming months are expected to see increased political activity across the state as parties strategize for upcoming elections and consolidate their positions. The effectiveness of the current government in delivering on its promises and addressing public concerns will be a key determinant of its political standing. Meanwhile, the opposition continues to mount pressure by highlighting what it describes as policy failures and neglect of developmental agendas.
