Himachal Congress Links Election Protest to Quit India Movement

The Himachal Pradesh Congress on Sunday drew a parallel between its ongoing campaign against alleged electoral irregularities and the historic Quit India Movement of 1942. State party leaders asserted that the nation stands united in demanding accountability from the Election Commission and the central government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Protest Demands CEC’s Removal

Addressing reporters in Una as part of demonstrations against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar and the BJP administration, state Congress in-charge Rajni Patil stated that the party’s agitation would persist until Kumar was removed from his post.

Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that Ms. Patil highlighted long-standing allegations made by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi concerning the BJP’s use of unfair tactics in elections. She claimed that the recent Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, coupled with allegations of irregularities involving the Election Commission, had strengthened the Congress’s stance.

Ms. Patil further stated that Mr. Gandhi was actively pursuing these issues both within and outside Parliament, receiving support from various opposition parties. She alleged that the CEC possessed excessive immunity and should have stepped down in light of the controversies. Citing the situation in Chandigarh, she claimed that approximately one-third of the six lakh votes had been removed from electoral rolls during the SIR process, and the Congress intended to pursue legal avenues regarding this matter.

The party announced that protests held on October 7 would be succeeded by a larger demonstration in Delhi on November 1, with an expected turnout of over ten lakh Congress supporters.

Allegations of Political Maneuvering

Mukesh Agnihotri, the Deputy Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, accused the BJP of engaging in what he termed as “chanda chori” (donation theft), “vote chori” (vote theft), “MLA chori” (MLA theft), and “sarkaar chori” (government theft). He alleged that the BJP had attempted to destabilize the Congress government in the state through “Operation Lotus,” but their efforts had ultimately failed.

Mr. Agnihotri also referenced the defection of nine Congress legislators, asserting that the party had managed to retain power despite these political developments. The political landscape in Himachal Pradesh has been marked by challenges for the ruling Congress government, with allegations of poaching and defections from opposition parties.

Concerns Over Electoral Integrity

Harish Chander Meena, a Lok Sabha member from Rajasthan, commented that the SIR exercise and the controversy surrounding the CEC had brought alleged irregularities within the electoral process to the forefront. He expressed that these developments had raised significant concerns regarding the credibility of the Election Commission, the reliability of electronic voting machines (EVMs), and the overall electoral system in India.

The Congress leaders involved in the protests reiterated their demand for accountability from the Election Commission and the Union government. They affirmed that the nationwide agitation aimed at highlighting these concerns and advocating for electoral reforms would continue. The party’s stance underscores a broader debate about transparency and fairness in India’s election processes, particularly following recent electoral exercises and administrative decisions by the Election Commission.
