The Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC) has strongly condemned alleged restrictions imposed by Chinese authorities on Tibetans attempting to provide aid in the aftermath of an earthquake in Nagchu, Tibet, and has called for immediate humanitarian assistance for those affected by the disaster.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the executive committee of the TYC issued a statement detailing concerns over the handling of the relief efforts following a magnitude-7 earthquake that struck on October 22. Reports suggest the earthquake resulted in at least 16 fatalities and left approximately 46 people injured. The disaster also led to the collapse of over 339 houses, causing significant damage to homes, property, and the livelihoods of residents, according to international media reports cited by the organisation.
The earthquake’s impact extended to triggering landslides and rockfalls, which severely disrupted road connectivity and communication networks. Power outages were reported in urban centres, and ongoing fears of further seismic activity compelled residents to seek shelter outdoors, away from their damaged homes. The organisation also highlighted that individuals staying outside faced the added threat of encounters with wild animals, including bears.
Expressing profound sorrow over the loss of life, the TYC conveyed its solidarity with the victims and their families. The organisation emphasised the critical need for immediate support to aid residents in recovering from the devastating effects of the earthquake.
A significant point of concern raised by the TYC pertains to reports that Chinese authorities allegedly prevented Tibetans from the three traditional regions of Tibet – U-Tsang, Kham, and Amdo – from travelling to the earthquake-affected areas to offer assistance. Citing publications from Tibet Radio, the TYC specifically condemned these purported restrictions, arguing that they hindered Tibetans from extending mutual support during a critical humanitarian emergency.
The organisation has formally requested that the urgent needs of the affected population be addressed promptly and that relief aid reaches all those who require it.
The statement from the TYC also drew attention to the environmental vulnerability of the Tibetan Plateau. It underscored the vital importance of the plateau’s ecological health, not only for the Tibetan people but also for millions across Asia who rely on its water resources and environmental systems.
In its appeal, the TYC urged that humanitarian relief and environmental protection be maintained as top priorities. Furthermore, the organisation called for the preservation of Tibet’s distinct cultural identity and its invaluable natural resources.
