Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has been nominated for a Rajya Sabha seat from Madhya Pradesh, a move that effectively secures his continuation in the Narendra Modi-led Union Cabinet. The seat became available following the resignation of Union Minister L Murugan.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that this nomination ends speculation surrounding the Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas’s political future. Puri, 74, is the sole Sikh member of the current Council of Ministers, making his retention significant.
The Bharatiya Janata Party’s decision to renominate Puri comes ahead of anticipated state elections in Punjab early next year. His political standing had been subject to discussion after the BJP opted not to re-nominate him from Uttar Pradesh for the biennial Rajya Sabha elections. That decision was reportedly made with an eye on the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls, with state leaders being prioritized for re-nomination within the state.
Puri’s tenure in the Rajya Sabha was slated to conclude in November. His renomination signals strong backing from Prime Minister Modi. Previously, Puri had contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Amritsar, Punjab, but was unsuccessful, with Congress candidate Gurjit Aujla winning that seat.
The Union Minister has faced scrutiny from opposition parties, notably the Congress, concerning alleged associations with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The upcoming Rajya Sabha by-election for the Madhya Pradesh seat is scheduled to be held on November 12.
