Fact-checking Policy

Commitment to Accuracy

Accuracy is central to the credibility of The Chenab Times. Our journalism is guided by the principle of due accuracy, which means information is not only factually correct but also presented with appropriate context, balance, and clarity.

We recognise that absolute certainty is not always possible in journalism. Where facts are disputed, evolving, or incomplete, we clearly acknowledge uncertainty and avoid speculation.

Standards of Verification

Before publication, all content is subject to editorial verification proportionate to its nature, sensitivity, and potential impact.

  • Claims, allegations, and factual assertions are verified using reliable and credible sources.

  • Wherever possible, information is corroborated by at least two independent sources.

  • When only a single source is available, its credibility is carefully assessed and clearly contextualised.

  • Documentary evidence is preferred over uncorroborated verbal claims whenever feasible.

  • Data, surveys, and research findings are reviewed for methodology, context, and limitations, which are disclosed to readers where relevant.

Differentiation by Content Type

Fact-checking standards vary depending on the nature of the story:

  • Breaking news prioritises speed with verification; updates are issued as facts are confirmed.

  • Investigative and accountability reporting undergoes the highest level of scrutiny and corroboration.

  • Analysis and explainers rely on verified facts while clearly separating interpretation from reporting.

  • Opinion content is fact-checked for factual accuracy, though viewpoints remain the author’s own.

Handling Allegations and Claims

  • Individuals or institutions facing allegations are given a fair opportunity to respond.

  • Claims that cannot be independently verified are clearly attributed and appropriately qualified.

  • Unsupported allegations are not presented as established fact.

  • Anonymous sources are used only when justified by public interest and approved by senior editors, in line with our Ethics Policy.

Editorial Review Process

All stories undergo editorial review before publication.

  • The level of review depends on the complexity, sensitivity, and urgency of the content.

  • Editors assess sourcing, factual consistency, attribution, and contextual accuracy.

  • Senior editorial oversight is applied to sensitive, legal, or high-impact stories.

Corrections and Accountability

We stand by the accuracy of our reporting. If factual errors are identified after publication, they are corrected promptly and transparently in accordance with our Correction Policy.

We do not knowingly misinform, distort facts, or present fabricated information as journalism.

Sources and Attribution

  • Sources are clearly identified wherever possible.

  • Anonymous sources are explained to the extent feasible so readers can assess credibility.

  • Information obtained from other news organisations or platforms is clearly attributed.

  • Social media content is not treated as fact unless independently verified.

User-Generated Content

User-generated content is treated with caution.

  • Such material is not assumed to be accurate by default.

  • Reasonable steps are taken to verify authenticity, origin, and context.

  • User-generated content is clearly labelled as such.

  • Content from individuals or groups with a vested interest is scrutinised carefully.

Special care is taken with content sourced from social media, where misinformation can spread rapidly. Fact is distinguished clearly from rumour, speculation, or opinion.

Transparency with Readers

When information is incomplete, contested, or evolving, we inform readers of:

  • What is known,

  • what is not yet confirmed, and

  • The efforts made to verify the information.

We encourage readers to report inaccuracies through the correction mechanism provided on our website.

Fact-checking at The Chenab Times is a shared responsibility. Reporters are expected to approach information with professional scepticism, editors are responsible for rigorous review, and contributors are required to meet the same standards of accuracy and verification.

Our credibility depends on getting the facts right and being transparent when facts change or errors occur. These standards guide how we report, analyse, and explain events for our readers.
