Mobile Internet To Remain Suspended In Kashmir Till Sept 6: Govt

The administration has announced that mobile internet services in Kashmir Valley will be suspended until September 6. The authorities had snapped telephony and internet except lesser-used BSNL services following the demise of Hurriyat Conference chairman on the evening of September 1.

Shaleen Kabra, the Principal Secretary to the Government, issued an order suspending mobile internet until 1700 on September 6, “unless adjusted earlier.”

On September 3, the order was issued following a “objective assessment of the current situation and the necessity of continuing (the) restrictions.””

He said reports from law enforcement agencies were obtained, and it was found that the directives had a positive impact on “misuse of data services for rumour mongering, propagation of fake news, provocation for violence, and so on.”

While the situation has remained peaceful for the most part, he noted there had been “sporadic events” in some areas.

He claimed that there is still a threat of a breakdown of peace and public order as a result of “nefarious schemes by Pakistan-backed handlers from across the border and secessionist forces within, using mobile data services.”

“After careful consideration of the overall security scenario, I, Principal Secretary to the Government, Home Department, being satisfied that it is absolutely necessary to do so in the interest of India’s sovereignty and integrity, the security of the state, and the maintenance of public order, in exercise of the powers conferred under sub-section (2) of section 5 of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885 and sub-section (3) of section 5 of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, and sub-section (4) of section 5 of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, ““However, mobile data services in the Kashmir Valley will remain suspended until September 6, 2021, at 1700 hrs, unless otherwise modified.” On September 3, at 10 p.m., all networks, including Jio and Airtel, restored mobile calling.

“The IGP Kashmir will immediately ensure that the service providers comply with this directive. He will also keep a tight eye on the effects of the limits being lifted, according to the order.
