Héctor Rusthenford Guerrero Flores, widely known as “Niño Guerrero” and identified as a principal leader of the transnational criminal organization Tren de Aragua, has been killed in a joint operation conducted by United States and Venezuelan forces. The announcement was made on Friday, June 13, 2026, by U.S. President Donald Trump, who stated that Guerrero Flores was eliminated in a “swift and lethal kinetic strike.”
The operation, which involved close coordination between U.S. military and Venezuelan security forces, targeted a Tren de Aragua compound. The Venezuelan Ministry of Communications confirmed Guerrero Flores’ death in a statement, noting that clashes occurred with members of criminal structures, resulting in his neutralization. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth indicated that the strike was part of a collaborative effort with Venezuelan security forces, underscoring a shared commitment to combating narco-terrorists.
Tren de Aragua, which originated as a prison gang in Venezuela’s Aragua state, has evolved into a sprawling transnational network with operations extending across Latin America, the United States, and even into Europe, including Spain. The organization is known for a wide range of illicit activities, including extortion, kidnapping, human trafficking, drug trafficking, migrant smuggling, and illegal mining. The U.S. State Department designated Tren de Aragua as a foreign terrorist organization in February 2025, and the U.S. Treasury Department sanctioned individuals and entities affiliated with the group in December 2025.
Guerrero Flores, who was considered a most-wanted fugitive by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, was instrumental in transforming the Venezuelan prison gang into a vast transnational operation. He had been indicted in January 2026 on charges of ordering, directing, and facilitating acts of terrorism within the United States. U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton had previously described him as the “mastermind of Tren de Aragua’s evolution from a Venezuelan prison gang into a transnational terrorist organization.”
The collaboration between the U.S. and Venezuela on this operation follows a period of renewed diplomatic engagement. Diplomatic relations were restored after the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in January 2026. Maduro was subsequently transferred to U.S. custody, facing federal charges for allegedly conspiring to import cocaine into the United States, with Guerrero Flores named as a co-conspirator in the indictment. Maduro has pleaded not guilty to these charges.
The Venezuelan government has reaffirmed its commitment to combating organized crime and stated its intention to continue taking necessary measures to ensure the safety and protection of its citizens. The joint operation, which reportedly involved intelligence sharing and specialized technical support from Venezuela, highlights a shift towards greater cooperation in addressing transnational criminal threats. This cooperation is facilitated by the reopened U.S. Embassy in Caracas, which aims to improve communication channels and direct access to institutions for coordinated efforts against threats like drug trafficking and organized crime.
The Tren de Aragua has been a significant concern for regional and international security due to its extensive network and adaptable criminal strategies. The organization has exploited vulnerable populations, particularly Venezuelan migrants, to further its illegal operations. The ongoing efforts by both the U.S. and Venezuela aim to dismantle the group’s infrastructure and disrupt its illicit activities throughout the hemisphere.
