Delhi riots: Court allows Safoora Zargar to visit Kishtwar for Eid

Safoora Zargar, a scholar and activist from the Jamia Millia Islamia who is charged in the alleged larger conspiracy case that led to the riots in northeast Delhi, has been granted permission by a Delhi court to travel to her hometown of Kishtwar in J&K’s Chenab Valley for Eid-ul-Adha.

Additional Sessions Judge Naveen Gupta gave the petitioner permission to leave the capital city where she is presently residing and instructed her to send the investigating officer the itinerary of her visit via official email.

Zargar’s counsel said that she was granted regular bail by the Delhi High Court on June 23, 2020, and one of the terms of the bail was that the applicant needed authorization from the relevant court in order to leave the Delhi National Capital Territory.

According to her counsel, the petitioner is currently staying in her matrimonial house in Delhi. On July 10, the applicant’s complete family, including his or her in-laws, would celebrate Eid-ul-Adha at their hometown of Kishtwar. He proposed that the celebration of Eid-ul-Adha be held only in Kishtwar because that is where the applicant/accused and her husband are from.

Furthermore, it is claimed that the applicant has been abiding by all other bail requirements established by the High Court.

The applicant has been present at all previous hearings in this case and undertakes to do so at any further hearings, whether they take place in person or online, as soon as they are announced.

It went on to say that the applicant is not a “flight risk” and is prepared to follow any rules set forth by this court.

In its ruling on Monday, the court also ordered Zargar to share her location through Google Maps so the investigating officer could verify it. The judge granted the applicant’s request for a visit from July 7 to July 31 and instructed her to join the ongoing proceedings on August 1.
