A Delhi court has permitted the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to conduct the final rites for the mortal remains of 11 individuals who perished in a car bomb explosion near the Red Fort last November. The court’s order also allows for the disposal of the body parts of Dr. Umer Un Nabi, identified as the driver of the vehicle used in the suicide attack.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Special Judge Pitambar Dutt directed the NIA to ensure the disposal of the biological remains with full dignity and in adherence to the religious beliefs of the deceased. A compliance report is to be submitted by the agency following the completion of the process.
The NIA had informed the court that all necessary forensic examinations of the victims’ remains and Dr. Nabi’s body parts had concluded. The agency sought permission for the disposal, citing the progressive decomposition of the remains.
The devastating blast, triggered by a high-intensity improvised explosive device (IED), occurred near the Red Fort on November 10, 2025, resulting in the deaths of 11 people and injuring several others. The incident sent shockwaves across the nation, prompting a swift investigation by the NIA.
Earlier, on May 14, the NIA had filed a comprehensive chargesheet spanning 7,500 pages in connection with the blast. In a subsequent development last month, a supplementary chargesheet was filed against three additional accused. Among these was an absconding paediatrician, alleged to be a founding member of the militant module responsible for orchestrating the attack. This latest filing brought the total number of individuals charged in the case to 13, including the deceased suicide bomber, Dr. Umer Un Nabi.
The investigation has aimed to unravel the network behind the attack, identifying key operatives and their alleged roles in planning and executing the blast. The NIA’s efforts have focused on gathering evidence, examining forensic reports, and prosecuting those identified as having links to the militant group suspected of carrying out the bombing.
The court’s decision marks a significant step in bringing closure to the families of the victims, allowing for the respectful final disposition of their loved ones’ remains after forensic procedures were completed. The legal proceedings are ongoing, with the NIA continuing its efforts to bring all perpetrators to justice.
