The central government will supply 1,000 metric tonnes of onions to the national capital, Delhi, which will be made available to consumers at Rs 35 per kilogram. This initiative aims to address concerns over the rising prices and availability of onions in the city.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced the supply on Tuesday, stating that the Delhi government is committed to preventing an onion shortage and is closely monitoring the market for this essential commodity. The subsidised onions will be distributed through a network of fair price shops across the city.
To further enhance accessibility, one mobile van will be deployed in each of Delhi’s 13 districts. These mobile units will circulate within their designated areas, ensuring that residents who may find it difficult to visit fair price shops can still purchase onions at the government-fixed rate of Rs 35 per kg. The Chief Minister’s Office emphasised that the government’s primary objective is to guarantee the availability of essential food items at affordable prices, thereby protecting ordinary consumers from exorbitant costs.
The Delhi government has assured the public that all necessary measures will be taken to maintain adequate supplies of onions in the capital and to avert any potential shortages. This proactive approach is expected to stabilise market prices and provide relief to consumers grappling with the increasing cost of essential vegetables.
